The Waldvogelpfad, Kapellenberg and town museum show how many different ways there are to discover Hofheim am Taunus: through nature, archaeological traces, and art and local history. When planning a trip, choose which highlights to explore together – a learning trail in the forest, the history of an early settlement, or an exhibition about the town.

Forest and nature trails

The freely accessible Waldvogelpfad in the Hofheim town forest runs at the end of Breckenheimer Straße towards Sportpark Heide. Seven learning stations provide information about woodland birds and the forest as a habitat. Children’s groups and families can book a rally there following the tawny owl’s tracks. It takes around two to three hours and is 2.5 kilometres long – specific time and distance details to help plan your day.

The Waldgarten in Hofheim am Taunus also brings together a range of nature themes: it is a habitat for plants and animals, as well as a place for learning and relaxation. The forest and species conservation educational trail in the Waldgarten complements this focus with more than 40 picture and text panels offering information about forest and species conservation.

The “Mensch und Erde” (People and Earth) hiking trail offers a different perspective. It connects the central town of Hofheim am Taunus with the northern district of Lorsbach. Geological information panels and a digital supplementary layer make it possible to follow how the landscape around Hofheim developed. An information leaflet on the same subject has also been available since 2020. Those interested in landscape history will find an approach here that connects observing nature with geological context.

Kapellenberg: Settlement history in the landscape

One of the largest settlements of the Michelsberg culture, dating from 4200 to 3500 BC, was located on Kapellenberg near Hofheim am Taunus. The complex covered 45 hectares, of which 26 hectares were built up. The former ramparts are still visible in the landscape. This makes it possible to understand the settlement’s scale not only through its date, but also through its visible traces.

The four-kilometre Archaeological Circular Trail leads past information panels and through the history of Hofheim’s local hill and its settlement, reaching back to the Neolithic period. The access to the mountain chapel is also important when planning a visit: from the hiking trail on Kreuzweg road, a steeply ascending footpath leads up in about five minutes. The Cohausentempel stands in the forest on Kapellenberg and can be reached via hiking trails.

Town museum and getting there

Opened in 1993, the Hofheim Town Museum is located right next to the historic Kellereibezirk. Its permanent exhibition covers art, archaeology and local history. The cultural offering thus ranges from early settlement traces on Kapellenberg to themes in the town’s history and art. Expert-guided town tours also offer insights into Hofheim and its history.

To travel from Frankfurt am Main, you can take the S2 towards Niedernhausen via Hofheim station, or a regional train towards Limburg, also via Hofheim station. The town museum is within walking distance of the bus and train stations, making it easy to reach by public transport. Check the timetable before travelling.
