Buchenberg combines a hike through heathland with the viewpoint area on the Estenberg. Estenberg Circular Trail 1 starts at the festival grounds in Buchenberg, passes a juniper heath and continues to the viewpoint area. At 4.6 kilometres long and taking around an hour and a half to walk, the loop is easy to fit into a day trip. It provides a concrete point of reference when choosing where to stay if you want to focus on getting active and enjoying the landscape.

On foot around the Estenberg

The route is classified as easy. Together with its approximate duration and length, this gives you helpful details for fitting the hike into your day’s plans. Along the way, the juniper heath is followed by the viewpoints in the Estenberg area. The route thus takes you from a distinctive landscape feature to a destination with views, without requiring a long walk. Check the current route before setting out.

Juniper heath and natural monument

Buchenberg’s local hiking landscape includes a juniper heath where heath pinks grow. The area near Buchenberg has been protected as a natural monument, “Juniper and Broom Area,” since 1985. Its protected status and heath pinks give the landscape a distinctive character. On the hike, you can experience the heathland as a tangible part of the surroundings, rather than planning your route solely around distance and walking time.

Getting to the hike

The Estenberg Circular Trail is accessible by train and bus. The nearest stop is Vöhl-Buchenberg Mitte, served by routes 501.1 and AST581.6. If travelling by car, there is the Estenberg hiking car park. As public transport details may change, check your connection before travelling. This lets you choose how to get there to suit your plans without assuming a particular mode of transport.

Culture and history in Vöhl

The former synagogue in Vöhl is a simple half-timbered building in the centre of Vöhl. Built in 1827 and inaugurated in 1829, it serves as a venue for concerts, talks and commemorative events. Hessenstein Castle was built in the 14th century on the medieval trade route from Frankfurt to Hamburg. In 1922, it became the first youth hostel in Hesse. The two places tell different chapters of Vöhl’s history: the former synagogue through its architectural history and present-day use as an event venue, and the castle through its medieval origins and its later role as a youth hostel.

Nature experiences and distinctive buildings in Vöhl

The bat nature trail in Vöhl-Asel features interactive stations and clearly signposted information. It includes a bat exhibition in an old transformer station. Infrared cameras offer live views into a maternity roost. In the evening, bats can be observed using a bat detector and night-vision device; prior registration with the hunting association is required. Check in advance whether the equipment is available.

Another distinctive structure in the wider destination is the 60-metre-long, four-arched Eder Bridge near Alt-Asel. It is considered the best-preserved structure in the old Eder Valley. As the water level of Lake Edersee falls, it is the first structure to emerge. Its appearance is therefore directly linked to the water level. The bridge offers a different perspective on Vöhl from the hiking trails, bat station or historic architecture.
