Accommodation in Harbshausen
Harbshausen borders Kellerwald-Edersee National Park directly; the Himmelsbreite National Park entrance is near Harbshausen. Several trails lead through the surrounding area. Nearby, Lake Edersee offers opportunities for swimming and surfing. Water conditions vary by season; check them before planning a day of swimming or surfing.
Trails from Himmelsbreite
At the national park entrance, a wheelchair-accessible route leads to the Hagenstein viewpoint. The one-way route is 1.2 km long. As trail conditions can change, check the current conditions before your visit.
- Trail H 1 is about 5.5 km long and leads from Himmelsbreite through the wildlife enclosure to Hagenstein, down to Kirchlotheim, and back via the Schulpfad trail.
- Trail H 3 is about 5 km long. From Himmelsbreite, it runs to the left before the wildlife enclosure, through the Breitenbach valley to the lake, and back via the lakeside road.
- Trail H 4 is about 7 km long. It follows the Edersee lakeside road toward Asel, turns right at a sand pit, runs through the Graben valley to Bettelkopf, and leads back.
- Trail H 5 is about 4.5 km long and follows the Schulpfad trail to the Ederpfad trail; the return route is via the road between Herzhausen and Harbshausen.
Based on their approximate lengths, H 4 is the longest of the four trails listed, and H 5 is the shortest. H 1 at about 5.5 km and H 3 at about 5 km fall between them. This makes it possible to compare the routes by length and the route descriptions.
Alpacas and local history
Kellerwald Alpakas offers tours exploring the area around Harbshausen on Lake Edersee; the operator is located directly at Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. Visits to the alpaca pasture can be arranged separately from the tours by phone or through the ticket shop. Visitors can watch, photograph, feed, and pet the animals. The operator also offers picnics on the alpaca pasture, bookable by appointment, with a short introduction at the farm. Afterwards, visitors can feed the alpacas mineral feed. Check the latest booking information before making plans.
Harbshausen’s chapel also offers a concrete point of connection with local history. It was built in 1570. Due to its dilapidated condition, it was completely rebuilt from 1720; the reconstruction was completed in 1721, and the interior furnishings in 1726. Its construction history thus unfolded in several clearly dated stages.
Group accommodation on Lake Edersee
The Sport, Nature and Adventure Camp Edersee is group accommodation for young people in the Breitenbach valley on the shore of Lake Edersee, below Harbshausen. Facilities include an indoor climbing wall, canoes, mountain bikes, and a large all-weather sports field. Access is geared toward groups and organized programs.
