Discover Marienhagen: Church and Planet Trail
Accommodation in Marienhagen
Marienhagen combines its church with a themed trail whose stations explain the solar system. A nearby, wooded church site adds a partly uncertain historical interpretation and views across the region to a visit to the village.
Church, Frankenkirche and Planet Trail
The church in Marienhagen was formerly known as St. Mary’s and was probably built in the first half of the 13th century. It can be visited at any time; you can obtain the key from the sexton, the church council or the parish office. As the key arrangements may change, it is advisable to enquire briefly before your visit.
The site of the Frankenkirche lies near Marienhagen and is associated with an early hilltop church from the period of Christianisation. This historical interpretation is partly uncertain. Visitors may enter and explore the wooded grounds, subject to the rules governing private property. From there, views extend across the surrounding region. This lets you contrast a visit to the church in the village with a visit to the woods, which offers regional views and a cautiously interpreted glimpse into early history.
The themed trail starts in Marienhagen and runs for around six kilometres via Vöhl to Basdorf. The Planet Trail stations explain the solar system; the route also includes regional viewpoints. It is considered easy and combines walking with information stations and views. Trail conditions may vary, so it is a good idea to check the current situation before setting out.
More cultural and nature highlights in the destination of Vöhl
Other places in the wider destination of Vöhl offer their own opportunities for discovery. The former Vöhl Synagogue is a simple half-timbered building in the centre of Vöhl. Built in 1827 and inaugurated in 1829, it serves as a venue for concerts, lectures and memorial events. If you would like to attend an event, check the relevant dates.
The bat nature trail in Vöhl-Asel combines interactive stations with clearly signposted information. The facilities there include a bat exhibition in a former transformer station. Infrared cameras offer live views into a maternity roost. Alongside its historic buildings, the destination of Vöhl therefore also offers a dedicated nature-related attraction.
The Eder Bridge near Alt-Asel offers a unique perspective on the Edersee’s changing water levels. The 60-metre-long bridge, with its four arches, is the first structure to emerge as the water level falls. It is also considered the best-preserved structure in the old Eder valley. The interplay between the bridge and the water level makes it a different kind of attraction from the historic churches and the bat exhibition.
Hessenstein Castle also represents the history of the wider destination of Vöhl. It was built in the 14th century along the medieval trade route from Frankfurt to Hamburg and became Hesse’s first youth hostel in 1922. In the municipality of Vöhl, hikers can choose from almost 50 signposted trails, in addition to the long-distance Kellerwaldsteig and Urwaldsteig trails.
