Obernburg offers two distinct perspectives for planning a trip: the striking details of its parish church and the surrounding woodland scenery. At the church, the eye moves from the Gothic entrance portal to the west tower and the altar crucifix dating from 1683. Around Obernburg, a well-developed network of hiking trails leads through deciduous and spruce forests. Other features include Koppelberg, with its views of the Vöhler plateau, as well as extensive chestnut groves and rare plant populations in the area.

Gothic Portal, Tower, and Altar Crucifix

The Gothic entrance portal of Obernburg’s parish church is a distinctive architectural feature. A portal is the designed entrance to a building; here, its Gothic style is explicitly identified. Other features come into focus at the west tower: its bell chamber has external timber cladding, and the tower also has a Welsche Haube (an onion-shaped dome) dating from the 17th century. The portal and tower thus offer different ways to appreciate architectural forms and their design.

Another work of art in the parish church is the altar crucifix. The Waldeck Baroque sculptor Josias Wolrad Brützel created it in 1683. Particularly noteworthy is that its original painted finish is still very well preserved. These cultural details complement one another: the portal represents Gothic design, while the crucifix brings together its date, creator, and the preservation of its original colors.

Hiking Trails and Scenery Around Obernburg

The well-developed network of hiking trails around Obernburg runs through lush deciduous and spruce forests. Another landscape feature is Koppelberg, which is 430 meters above sea level. From there, you can enjoy wonderful views of the Vöhler plateau. The area around Obernburg also has extensive chestnut groves and rare plant populations. The landscape therefore encompasses forest trails, distinctive features of the local plant life, and a named viewpoint.

When planning, you can prioritize these highlights according to your interests: the church portal and crucifix offer specific points of interest for culture enthusiasts, while the hiking trail network and Koppelberg bring the landscape to the fore. If people with different interests are traveling together, you can first choose between church art, forest trails, and views, without having to settle on a fixed route.

The bat trail in Vöhl-Asel features interactive stations and clearly signposted information. It also includes a bat exhibition in an old transformer station; infrared cameras provide live views inside a maternity roost. As the technical equipment may change, check before visiting whether the camera feeds are currently available. In the evening, bats can be observed hunting with a bat detector and night-vision device, provided you have registered in advance.

The Eder Bridge near Alt-Asel is another distinctive point of interest in the wider Vöhl destination. The 60-meter-long bridge has four arches and is considered the best-preserved structure in the old Eder Valley. When the water level of Lake Edersee falls, it is the first structure to emerge; this visible phenomenon therefore depends on the water level.
