Otterndorf lies right on the North Sea. The more than 600-year-old town centre, the Medem and a variety of water-based activities give the place several different sides. Among half-timbered warehouses and literary history, public art, cycling routes and waterside leisure activities, you can choose how to balance culture and active days.

Old town, church and literary history

Well-preserved warehouses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries are part of the historic old town. St. Severi Church, also known as the “Farmers’ Cathedral”, is the largest church in the Land Hadeln region, with furnishings that are predominantly Baroque. In preparation for the construction of the Dietrich-Christoph-Gloger organ in 1741, the church acquired its present exterior form. The organ is considered the largest Baroque organ in the Elbe-Weser organ region and was named Organ of the Year 2020.

Johann Heinrich Voß lived in the former rector’s house with his family from 1778 to 1782; today it is the Johann Heinrich Voß Literature Museum. The exhibition presents Voß as a poet, editor and translator, as well as a publicist, friend and private individual. An audio station and a multimedia station offer insights into his life and work. The Museum of Non-Objective Art at Marktstraße 10 is another cultural venue in Otterndorf.

You can also encounter art outdoors: Otterndorf Sculpture Park brings public art to life along the Medem and in the old town. The sculptures invite you to discover, pause, reflect and take photographs. The listed Neoclassical garden pavilion is centrally located in the old town, surrounded by house gardens and the “Eschweide” park, right beside the historic Süderwall.

Paths, water and activity

The unspoilt Philosophenweg begins at the orchard at the start of Müggendorfer Straße and runs along the Medem to the See Achtern Diek leisure complex. Several well-signposted regional, national and international cycle routes pass by the North Sea resort of Otterndorf. This gives you both a specific walking route and routes for longer bike rides to use as starting points when planning your day.

The leisure complex next to the “See Achtern Diek” campsite includes three swimming lakes, playgrounds, giant water slides, a climbing ship, and beach volleyball and skating areas. Water sports in Otterndorf include swimming in the sea, kayaking on the Medem, stand-up paddleboarding on the lake, rowing, kiteboarding and windsurfing, as well as water skiing and wakeboarding. Check the latest operating details when making specific plans.

The natural beach at Kap Jakob is temporarily closed. Its sand deposits formed naturally; a belt of reeds surrounds the beach, which is directly connected to the marina. Kap Jakob is also a meeting point for family mudflat walks, whose programme may vary by season. When planning, take into account both the closure status and the dates.

At the mouth of the Elbe, Otterndorf offers a water and landscape park with leisure activities just behind the dike. The illuminated ship “Onkel Heinz” at Großer Specken in the historic old town offers another perspective on the water: it invites visitors on twilight trips along the Medem. The CUXLINER Beach Express runs seasonally from the railway station through the historic old town to the green beach and the leisure complex. Check the timetable before travelling; the times of the Medem trips may also change seasonally.
