Hassel (Weser) – Alluvial Forest, Church and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Hassel
Hassel (Weser) combines a long church history with a distinctive alluvial forest landscape and a described cycling route between Hoya and Verden. St. Cosmae et Damiani Church adds a cultural and historical highlight, while the alluvial forest and the seasonal bloom of hollow larkspur shape the nature experience at Alhuser Ahe. Hassel Windmill is another named landmark.
St. Cosmae et Damiani Church: History and Architecture
With a history of around 1,000 years, St. Cosmae et Damiani Church is one of the oldest sacred buildings in the Syke-Hoya church district and one of the oldest churches in the Middle Weser region. Its two-bay nave is 27 metres long and eight metres wide and stands on a moulded plinth. It includes a narrower western choir bay dating from the 12th century; the eastern bay was probably added at the end of the 13th century. The different dates thus trace several stages in the building’s history.
The furnishings include remarkable tombstones. One depicts a bride who is struck down and dies in front of the altar at the moment of her wedding. The pulpit also has a distinctive character: it is painted in the Bauernbarock style. The architecture, tomb art and pulpit each offer a different perspective on the history of the place.
Alhuser Ahe: Alluvial Forest and Spring Blossoms
Alhuser Ahe is a 22-hectare area of alluvial forest between Hassel and Hoya, east of the Weser. Visitors can walk on paths that are not closed; check whether any paths are closed before your visit. At the end of March and beginning of April, large white and purple carpets of hollow larkspur flowers bloom there. The exact timing may vary with the weather. This gives Alhuser Ahe a seasonal appeal, while the church’s history appeals to a different interest: whether you choose nature observation or architectural and cultural history can also influence the best time for your trip.
Cycling Route and Other Landmarks
The Hoya–Verden Weser Cycle Route circular tour follows the B 215 as far as Hassel’s town sign. There it turns onto Jübberweg and then reaches Landesstraße 330, which leads directly to Hoya. The town sign, Jübberweg and L 330 provide cyclists with specific landmarks to help plan their route; check the current route before setting off. Hassel Windmill is located on Mühlenstraße in 27324 Hassel (Weser). It is another named place, separate from the route described for the cycling tour.
More to Explore in the Wider Nienburg Destination
The wider Nienburg destination offers further cultural and historical subjects. Nienburg’s old town combines half-timbered façades, Weser Renaissance façades and brickwork; the town has a history stretching back 1,000 years. The Nienburg Museum traces the development of the Middle Weser region, from the presence of the first people to the present day, across three historic buildings. Its main building is the Fresenhof, a manor house built for a castle retainer in the 16th century. The museum also includes an asparagus museum, a Biedermeier garden and a lapidarium; the Neoclassical villa offers deeper insights into the 19th century.
Natural history and activities for younger children are also among the things to explore in Nienburg: the MĂĽnchehagen Dinosaur Park features more than 300 dinosaur footprints dating back around 140 million years. The park offers hands-on activities, especially for young children, including the excavation of a 25-metre-long skeleton. For a different view of the region, Flotte Mittelweser offers round trips, experience cruises and charter trips on the Weser and Aller, with departures from Nienburg or Verden. For specific plans, check the timetable with the operator.
Another clearly specified cycling option is a 23.6-kilometre circular tour on the Weser Cycle Route between Landesbergen and Stolzenau. Nine traditional barns have been preserved in the historic barn quarter of Im SchĂĽnebusch in Estorf. The barns there house a local history museum with exhibits on agricultural equipment, rural domestic culture, a bakehouse and village history. Groups can stay overnight in a rustic barn accommodation, provided they book in advance.
