Hämelhausen offers two distinct points of interest for a trip: the “Paradies Zum Guten Hirten” environmental project, with its community and burial park, and the “ALLERhand am WESERstrand” cycle tour, which passes through the village. The wider Nienburg destination complements these local attractions with its own cultural, nature-based and family experiences.

Community Park and Cycle Tour in Hämelhausen

The 600-square-metre project run by the Hassel parish includes a community and burial park. A report from 2024 describes monthly gatherings of villagers in the park for coffee, biscuits and a chat. These get-togethers bring the community purpose to life and add a communal aspect to the park’s role as a burial ground.

The “ALLERhand am WESERstrand” cycle tour runs along Hämelseestraße to Hämelhausen, then continues on the cycle path beside Dorfstraße towards Eystrup. There is no cycle path on the 3.5-kilometre stretch along Hämelseestraße. Check the route conditions before setting off, and factor in the change to the cycle path beside Dorfstraße when planning your ride.

Lake Hämelsee Nearby

Nearby is Lake Hämelsee, a natural bathing lake of about six hectares in a wooded area near the district of Anderten, northeast of the municipality of Heemsen. The cycle tour passes the lake and continues to Hämelhausen, making it a natural and swimming-related point of interest along the route. Swimming conditions and water quality can vary; check both before planning a visit for a swim.

Culture and Family Experiences in the Wider Nienburg Destination

In the wider Nienburg destination, the Museum Nienburg offers a focus on history. Across three historic buildings, it presents the development of the Middle Weser region from the presence of the first people to the present day. The Fresenhof, a 16th-century manor house, is the main building. The museum also includes the Asparagus Museum, the Biedermeier Garden and a lapidarium; the Neoclassical villa offers deeper insights into the 19th century. Its broad historical scope and specialist collections and garden themes offer different ways to explore regional history.

Nienburg’s old town features a mix of half-timbered façades, Weser Renaissance façades and brickwork. The town has a history spanning 1,000 years. Those who prefer architecture to exhibition spaces can see this mix of buildings as a complement to the museum-focused perspective.

Another cultural highlight in the wider Nienburg destination is the collegiate church of St. Maternian et St. Nicolai in Bücken. Its significant art treasures include a triumphal cross dating from 1230 and richly illustrated stained-glass windows from the 13th century.

For families with young children, Dinosaur Park Münchehagen offers hands-on activities, including the excavation of a 25-metre-long skeleton. More than 300 dinosaur footprints can also be seen there, bearing witness to a time around 140 million years ago. The park combines hands-on participation with visible traces of prehistoric times—a different way to explore the past from museum and town history.

The wider Nienburg destination also offers cyclists a 23.6-kilometre circular route on the Weser Cycle Path between Landesbergen and Stolzenau. Check the route conditions before setting off. This loop is another cycling suggestion alongside the “ALLERhand am WESERstrand” route in Hämelhausen.
