Hoyerhagen brings cultural history together with a distinctive landmark in the open countryside. Church art, a Galerieholländer windmill and a Jewish cemetery offer insights into different subjects; a guided cycling tour adds a ride with historical context.

Open countryside, church and windmill

In the open countryside around Hoyerhagen, a stone made especially by a sculptor marks the point known as the geographical center of Lower Saxony. The combination of a sculpted marker and a state-wide geographical designation makes this destination a distinctive part of local history.

St. Crucis Church in Hoyerhagen has a richly decorated wooden pulpit dating from 1681. A pulpit is the raised place from which a sermon is delivered; here, this function is complemented by detailed woodwork. The Hoyerhagen windmill adds a different architectural feature: it is a Galerieholländer windmill with an octagonal brick base, a surrounding gallery and an upper section clad in wooden shingles. Its components reveal the structure from the brick base to the wooden upper section.

The Jewish cemetery on Kahlenberg has 179 surviving gravestones dating from 1714 to 1935. For many years, the cemetery served as the central cemetery for a region that extended as far as Verden, Thedinghausen, Walsrode and Syke. The surviving stones and the cemetery’s historical role offer a different perspective on Hoyerhagen’s past from that provided by the church and windmill.

A guided cycling tour to the center

The guided cycling tour “By bike – a journey through time on wheels” passes the former count’s castle and Bücken Collegiate Church before reaching the geographical center in Hoyerhagen. The ride thus connects historic stops with a destination in the open countryside. It can be booked on request; check availability with the provider.

More to explore in the wider Nienburg travel destination

The Nienburg Museum traces the development of the Middle Weser region, from the first people to the present day, across three historic buildings. Its main building is the Fresenhof, a 16th-century manor house belonging to a castle garrison. The museum also includes the Asparagus Museum, the Biedermeier Garden and a lapidarium; the Neoclassical villa offers deeper insights into the 19th century. Together, these sites present several different periods and approaches to regional history.

Nienburg’s old town offers a different architectural impression: half-timbered façades, Weser Renaissance façades and brickwork shape its appearance. It is part of a historic town with a 1,000-year history. In Bücken, the collegiate church of St. Maternian et St. Nicolai houses significant art treasures, including a triumphal cross from 1230 and richly illustrated stained-glass windows from the 13th century.

For young children, Dinosaur Park MĂĽnchehagen offers hands-on activities, including excavating a 25-meter-long skeleton. More than 300 dinosaur footprints there bear witness to a time around 140 million years ago. Another cycling option in the wider Nienburg travel destination is a 23.6-kilometer circular route on the Weser Cycle Route between Landesbergen and Stolzenau. Check route conditions before setting out.
