Gandesbergen is connected to Schweringen by the Schweringen Weser ferry. The high-wire chain ferry with an electric motor makes crossing the river a practical part of planning your trip. Its history dates back to the 16th century. At the same time, cyclists and other visitors are increasingly using the ferry to cross the river. If you plan to include it as part of a cycling tour, check the operating hours in advance: the permanent connection and the timetable answer different questions.

Across the Weser on the Achter Tour

On the signposted Achter Tour, Gandesbergen is an intermediate point, not one of its endpoints. The route is about 54 kilometres long, runs in a figure-eight between Bruchhausen-Vilsen and Eystrup, and is manageable as a day trip even for less experienced cyclists. In Schweringen, the tour crosses the Weser by ferry; it then heads east to Gandesbergen. The combination of a loop and a ferry crossing gives the cycling day a clear structure, with Gandesbergen along the way.

Circular route or Weser Cycle Route stage?

The fifth stage of the Weser Cycle Route, from Nienburg to Verden, follows a different route. It crosses the Weser on the Schweringen-Gandesbergen ferry, switches to the left bank of the river and continues via BĂĽcken to Hoya. Unlike the Achter Tour, this route description refers to a stage from Nienburg to Verden; the Achter Tour is a loop between Bruchhausen-Vilsen and Eystrup. This comparison can help with your planning: would you like a loop to shape your cycling day, or would a stage of the Weser Cycle Route suit your travel plans better? Check the ferry timetable and route conditions before setting out.

Culture in the wider Nienburg destination

In the wider Nienburg destination, the Nienburg Museum offers another perspective on the history of the Middle Weser region. Housed in three historic buildings, it traces the region’s development from the presence of the first people to the present day. The Fresenhof, a manor house dating from the 16th century, is the museum’s main building. The museum also includes the Asparagus Museum, the Biedermeier Garden and a lapidarium; the Neoclassical villa offers further insights into the 19th century. Nienburg’s old town has its own architectural character, too: half-timbered façades, Weser Renaissance façades and brickwork define the town, which has a history stretching back 1,000 years.

If, alongside cycling and museums in the wider Nienburg destination, you would like to plan a trip on the water, the Flotte Mittelweser offers sightseeing, experience and charter cruises on the Weser and Aller, departing from Nienburg or Verden. Check trips and times with the operator.
