Signposted cycling and hiking routes, a circular trail accessible to wheelchairs, mobility scooters and pushchairs, and regional art by the lake give Hilter am Teutoburger Wald its many facets. They are particularly easy to experience on the municipal cycling network, in the tree park on Pöhlenweg and around Renkenörener Lake.

Cycle routes and hiking trails

The districts of the municipality of Hilter can be explored on a fully signposted cycling network away from the busier roads. Those travelling on foot will find, among other routes, the named “Rund ümme Hilter” hiking trail: the northern loop passes through Borgloh, over Gersberg and by the observation tower on Strubberg.

The connecting trails also provide a practical guide for planning a day out. Marked with a “red fir tree”, they make for easy half-day hikes of around 15 kilometres each. This makes it possible to distinguish the described hiking routes by their course and approximate length.

Two of the 17 TERRA.trails signposted by TERRA.vita Nature Park pass through the municipality of Hilter. The 40-kilometre Bädertour (No. 15) is themed “Sand, salt and unusual stones”; Route No. 14 is 20 kilometres long and bears the motto “Black gold in the Borgloher Schweiz”. Their different lengths and themes offer distinct points of reference when choosing a route.

Other named trails run through Hilter or the Hilter area: the Hermannsweg follows the ridge of the Teutoburg Forest from Bad Iburg to Dissen. A route on the Ahornweg, marked with a maple leaf, runs from Bad Iburg via Hilter to Wellingholzhausen. Alongside the cycling network, these specific hiking routes through the municipality also provide useful guidance.

Tree park and art at Renkenörener Lake

The tree park on Pöhlenweg has a circular path with a water-bound surface. The grounds are accessible to wheelchairs, mobility scooters and pushchairs. A short path leads from the cemetery to the tree park, passing a wetland habitat where birds, frogs and other small animals live. The path also connects a visit to the park with a glimpse into this natural habitat.

Renkenörener Lake is in the district of Ebbendorf, at the foot of Wolfsquelle. There are resting places along a circular path, and the grounds are complemented by artworks that change each year. The works on display are by various regional artists, including nine sculptures by Osnabrück stonemason and sculptor Hans Gerd Ruwe. From mid-May to the end of July, the garden gates are open on Sundays from 2 to 6 pm. Check the latest visitor information before setting out.

Choose accommodation to suit your planned activities
