Discover Rieste: Water, routes and pilgrimage
Accommodation in Rieste
Rieste combines active experiences at Alfsee with nature topics and a centuries-old pilgrimage tradition. Water skiing and wakeboarding, two circular cycle routes and Kloster Lage each offer something different.
Nature and activity at Alfsee
The Alfsee Nature Conservation and Education Centre (nbz) in Rieste is an interactive centre exploring the history, birdlife and landscape dynamics of Alfsee. Seminars, walks, guided tours and courses complement the centre’s topics. A visit can therefore focus on more than observing nature: the development of the landscape and the history of Alfsee are also among the subjects covered there.
If you would like to explore Rieste by bike, you can choose between two circular cycle routes, both starting and ending at the Alfsee-Center. The Riester circular cycle route “Ort” is 15.36 kilometres long and takes about one hour. The Riester circular cycle route “Land” covers 26.55 kilometres; an approximate duration of two hours is given for this route. The distances and time estimates provide a practical guide for planning your day, without making any claims about the level of difficulty.
Water sports and other activities
At Alfsee StrandArena in Rieste, there are water-ski facilities with different levels of difficulty, as well as water-skiing and wakeboarding courses. This makes water sports a clear focus for anyone who would like to include an active programme in their trip. The StrandArena also has an 18-hole mini-golf course.
The AbenteuerWelt Germanenland is part of Alfsee Ferien- und Erlebnispark in Rieste. Its attractions include climbing logs, water games, an oracle and a maze. This offers a different focus from the water sports: the programme here features a range of play and discovery activities.
Kloster Lage and the Rosary Garden
Kloster Lage in Rieste has been a pilgrimage destination for centuries, drawing pilgrims to the Holy Cross of Lage, which dates from the 14th century. The Rosary Garden is also part of the site. It was created in 1994 and 1995 and is divided into two areas with cross-shaped paths. A total of 20 wayside shrines commemorate the lives of Jesus and Mary. The garden offers a distinct way to explore the religious history of the place, while the monastery anchors its long pilgrimage tradition.
