Discover Eggermühlen along trails that showcase nature and culture side by side. The Eggertal Discovery Trail is a circular route through the historic farming communities of Besten, Basum-Sussum, Döthen and Bockraden in the municipality of Eggermühlen. It offers cyclists and walkers impressions of culture and nature; nine covered shelters along the route provide places to take a break. The trail also offers insights into the symbolism of modern architecture. This brings landscape and architectural interpretation together on one tour.

Circular routes and woodland trails

The Sussum Stone Plateau lies directly on the “Eggertal Discovery Trail” cycling loop. The Maiburg Nature Reserve also extends into Eggermühlen. Trails in the area include marked hiking routes and the signposted “Vosspädken” forest nature trail. The trails offer different highlights: the Discovery Trail is a circular route with impressions of culture and nature, while hiking trails and the named forest nature trail take centre stage in Maiburg.

Poems along the Eggertal Poets’ Trail

Ten information panels along the Eggertal Poets’ Trail present poems by German poets and thinkers. Near Sussum, a 25-tonne granite boulder has been exposed in a wooded area; Goethe’s “The Erl-King” is presented nearby. The Poets’ Trail therefore has a literary focus. The Eggertal Discovery Trail, by contrast, also explores the symbolism of modern architecture—two different ways of engaging with culture along Eggermühlen’s trails.

In the wider Osnabrück destination

The wider Osnabrück destination also offers distinctive nature and culture experiences. The signposted dinosaur trail near the Bad Essen-Barkhausen dinosaur tracks is a 16-kilometre circular hiking route. The dinosaur tracks themselves form an attraction featuring two dinosaur replicas, detailed information panels and a circular path. Exhibits on the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest are presented using multimedia at the Kalkriese Museum and Park and are open to visitors.

Museums in other locations across the wider Osnabrück destination offer further cultural insights. At the Tuchmacher Museum Bramsche, soft woollen blankets are made on operating machines that are over 100 years old. The permanent exhibition at the Museum in the Monastery in Bersenbrück uses the building’s history to illustrate three periods: the monastery from the 13th to the 18th century, the district office and administration in the 19th century, and the museum in the 20th century.

The Baumwipfelpfad Bad Iburg offers another nature experience in the wider Osnabrück destination: its walkway is almost 600 metres long. The step-free entrance tower is over 30 metres high and offers panoramic views of Iburg Castle and the Teutoburg Forest. The treetop walk and exhibition pavilion provide insights into the geological history of the Teutoburg Forest and are part of the UNESCO Global Geopark TERRA.vita.
