Discover Jork: Trails, History and the Blossom Festival
Accommodation in Jork
Jork brings the history of the Altes Land region to life through themed trails, a museum and distinctive buildings. The historic walking tour and the orchard trail differ in both subject matter and length; St. Matthias adds an architectural highlight, while the Altländer Blossom Festival is a recurring event in May.
Trails with Different Themes
The historic walking tour “Changing Times in the Altes Land” in Jork is about 3.5 kilometres long and designed as a permanent open-air exhibition. It features 25 information boards with QR code explanations in German and English. This means visitors can access both information boards and bilingual QR explanations along the way. The orchard trail runs along Westerminnerweg in Jork and is around 1.5 kilometres long. The two routes therefore differ in both length and subject matter. When planning an outing, you can choose based on your preferred route length and interests.
Altes Land Museum: Technological History and Half-Timbered Architecture
Since 1990, the Altes Land Museum in Jork has presented the history of development and technology in the Altes Land region. Topics include the development of dike construction and drainage techniques. These examples bring technological developments in water management to life. Exhibits on shipping and fruit growing add further topics to the exhibition. The museum is housed in a magnificent traditional half-timbered house from the Altes Land, making the building itself an architectural highlight.
Temporary exhibitions and classical concerts are regularly held on the upper floor. If you would like to plan your visit around a particular event, check the current dates before you go. That way, you can tailor your trip to whether you want to explore the museum’s permanent themes or attend a specific exhibition or concert.
St. Matthias: Church, Dwelling Mound and Organ
The brick church of St. Matthias in Jork stands on a Wurt, a specially raised mound intended to protect against high water and storm surges. The Wurt’s intended protective function is therefore also part of the church’s architectural context. At 40 metres long and 14 metres wide, St. Matthias is the largest church in the Altes Land region. The organ case bears the mark of Arp Schnitger; its façade pipes are completely preserved. The organ thus offers a tangible connection to the history of music, alongside the church building.
Plan Your Visit to the Blossom Festival and Your Journey
The Altländer Blossom Festival has been held in Jork every year since 1981, on the first Saturday in May. The festival includes the crowning of the Altländer Blossom Queen. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the date for the relevant year in advance. Jork can be reached from Buxtehude, for example, by bus routes 2030 or 2040. If you plan to use this connection, check the current timetable before travelling.
