Verden (Aller) combines Gothic architecture with a city museum, a fairytale forest and routes along the Aller. Verden City Forest and the protected Verden Dunes also give the town a distinctive connection to nature. When planning your trip, you can choose from culture, family-friendly experiences and outdoor activities—or combine these different sides of the town.

Cathedral, Local History and Fairytale Experiences

Verden Cathedral was built in two Gothic phases: from 1290 to 1323 and again from 1473 to 1490. These two periods offer a concrete point of reference if you are interested in its architectural history during your visit. On a guided tour of the historic old town, you can also discover half-timbered houses, narrow lanes and the cathedral.

The Domherrenhaus Verden Historical Museum is housed in an imposing manor complex dating from 1708. Its three floors display cultural and ethnological collections covering the history of Verden and the surrounding region. Among the museum’s special exhibits are the Lehringen finds, presented in a reconstruction of a Stone Age elephant hunt. This brings regional and prehistoric subjects into focus alongside local history.

Magic Park Verden combines magic shows with a fairytale forest where the timeless stories of the Brothers Grimm come to life. If you are planning a trip with children, you can also include Kletterpark Verden: its climbing activities for families with children are described as featuring a safety system for children at least 1.30 m tall. Check the applicable height and supervision requirements before your visit. The climbing park also has a mini-golf course with twelve covered holes—another way to spend time together over a game.

Routes, Forest and Trips on the Water

There are different options for outdoor activities on land: the Aller Riverside Path is a cycling and walking route along the Aller between the North Bridge and the railway bridge. Verden City Forest also has an equestrian trail network approximately 30 km long. This approximate distance gives you an idea of its extent; by contrast, the riverside path is defined by its two endpoints and its route along the river.

A trip on the water is another possible excursion. The MS Stadt Verden is based in Verden and travels on the Aller and Weser. Its services include Aller-Weser round trips and excursions to Bremen. Check the timetable and seasonal operations before planning, so your day’s schedule fits the available trips.

The Verden Dunes have been a protected landscape since 1930 and feature a nature trail in Verden City Forest. This means the town offers a protected landscape and a route for nature experiences alongside its urban and riverside attractions. Depending on how you plan your stay, cultural events, activities by the water and time in the city forest can each add a different focus, without limiting you to just one way of exploring.

The Wider Verden Destination

The wider Verden destination also offers its own perspectives for excursions. In Verden district, the Aller Cycle Route follows a circular route between Verden and Rethem. In the “Dünengebiet und Halsetal bei Verden-Neumühlen” nature reserve, the landscape on the northern slope of the Verden Dunes merges with the Halsebach lowlands. There, complex, closely interwoven biotope structures create a distinctive landscape, which is accessible via designated hiking trails. An additional nature trail is planned. These regional destinations should be distinguished from the town of Verden (Aller) and broaden the scope of the wider destination.
