Buchholz lies directly on the southern shore of Lake Müritz, where the Müritz begins at the mouth of the Elde. Meadows, lakes and forests characterize the surrounding area, while the shade of a sprawling old lime-tree avenue lends the village a distinctive character. Every summer, a pair of storks takes up residence in the middle of the village, and the calls of cranes can be heard in Buchholz. Here, a striking location by the water meets a distinctive natural setting.

Waterside setting and village life

Buchholz has a harbor, as well as a bathing area. There is an on-site restaurant at Marina Buchholz. As its opening hours may change, check whether it is open before your visit. The harbor, bathing area and marina are useful reference points when considering which aspects of the village matter to you during your stay.

The landscape is also part of the village’s character: meadows, lakes and forests lie nearby, while the old lime-tree avenue provides shade. The storks’ return in summer and the calls of cranes heard in Buchholz add their own touches. Alongside the water, nature watching and the village’s green surroundings are also things to consider when planning your trip.

A church with a distinctive tower

At the center of Buchholz stands an early Gothic brick church dating back to around 1350. Its tower is the only tower open on three sides in the entire Müritz region and also serves as the church’s main entrance. This open design is not only a striking architectural detail but also serves a practical purpose.

The Buchholz village church is also home to the mural “Jesus Speaks to the Farmers” by Berlin artist Hildegard Kohnert-Michaelis. It was dedicated in July 1935. The building’s history, dating back to around 1350, thus stands alongside a work of art with a specific date from the 20th century.

A Christmas Eve tradition

Another aspect of Buchholz’s local history is the Knieperdackse tradition. On December 24, wild, rough and masked figures parade through the village. Even today, participants are preferably from Buchholz, although they do not always live there; participation may vary from year to year. Its fixed date on Christmas Eve gives the tradition a special place in the annual calendar and adds a cultural highlight alongside the summer’s nature-related attractions.

The Mecklenburg Lake District as a wider destination

Those looking at the wider Mecklenburg Lake District as a travel destination will find a distinctive natural landscape in Müritz National Park. The national park is part of the Mecklenburg Lake District and is characterized by forests, bogs, lakes and broad meadows. The Müritz National Park Hiking Trail explores the park’s landscapes and special features in nine stages. It follows lakeshores, passes through ancient forests and along inland dunes, and leads to the source of the Havel.

Another option is the informative tours of Müritz National Park offered by certified nature and landscape guides. These include guided walks in the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest of Serrahn and tours from the water. The nine-stage hiking trail and the guided tours differ in format and offer different starting points for planning a visit to the Mecklenburg Lake District.

Another distinct nature destination in the Mecklenburg Lake District is the Damerower Werder bison reserve. It lies on a peninsula in Lake Kölpin, within Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park; visitors can observe the animals there. The reserve also has a forest discovery trail with climbing activities, an ant house, an exhibition with tactile and visual panels, and a dendrophone. Wildlife watching and the trail’s various features offer concrete points of interest to help you plan your choice of activities within the wider destination.
