Vipperow lies at the southern tip of Lake Müritz, where the Elde flows into the Kleine Müritz. Its location makes water a central point of reference, but the local highlights go beyond that: Burgwall Island represents archaeological heritage, while the village church showcases architecture and art. This lets you plan your stay around a range of interests without limiting Vipperow to just one type of outing.

Water and Cycling Route

The official Vipperow bathing area is right on the Müritzarm. It is a specific place to swim if you are planning a water-focused trip. Vipperow is also one of the stops along the Müritz Round Trip. This offers a different reason to visit: the bathing area is a place to spend time by the water, while the stop connects Vipperow with a cycling tour. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between the two: would you like to include a place to swim, or make the Müritz Round Trip an active part of your journey?

Architecture and Historical Traces

Vipperow Church is a fieldstone building with a brick gable dating from the 13th century. The contrast between the materials makes the gable a distinctive architectural feature. The church also contains the 25-square-metre depiction of the Last Judgment in Vipperow. History painter Detlef Glöde reconstructed the scene in a small-scale version. The contrast in size between the 25-square-metre painting and Glöde’s small-scale reconstruction offers an opportunity to compare the subject at two different scales. The central shrine of the carved altarpiece was made around 1500. The dates therefore span from the 13th century to around 1500, bringing together architectural and art history across more than one era.

Burgwall Island near Vipperow is now a Grade I archaeological monument. This gives archaeology a distinct place alongside the church’s architectural and artistic history. Another historical perspective concerns crossing the Müritzarm: the historic earth causeway was built between 1843 and 1846, making a permanent crossing possible for the first time. This adds the development of a permanent connection across the water to the themes of church art and history.
