Gotthun: Müritz, Manor House and Lakeside Trails
Accommodation in Gotthun
Gotthun lies right on the Müritz, Germany’s largest inland lake, and has direct access to the water. The lake, trails and local history give this small destination several different sides: you can focus on culture, explore sections of the Müritz Circular Route or discover cycling and hiking trails around the lake. Which aspect matters most to you may also influence your choice of accommodation.
Manor House and Linden Avenue in Gotthun
Built in 1826 as a single-storey rendered building, the manor house is now the village’s cultural centre. The CJD Traditional Crafts Workshops are housed in the building, where Mecklenburg customs are kept alive. They are open to all visitors. If you would like to include the workshops in your visit, ask locally about the current programme.
Another distinctive feature is the magnificent Linden Avenue, Gotthun’s landmark. It complements the manor house as a cultural focal point and serves as a local landmark in the village landscape. The Schamper Mill is also near Gotthun. A watermill stood there until 1810; that same year, a Dutch-style windmill was built and remained in use until 1965. Today, it is a listed historic monument.
Trails, Water and Activities
The Müritz Circular Route offers a clear reference point when planning an outing: a 9.0-kilometre section runs from the harbour in Röbel to Gotthun. This is distinct from the Müritz Hiking Trail around the lake, which passes through Müritz National Park and goes directly by the Nitschow and Hirschberg campsites near Gotthun. You can also use cycling and hiking trails around the Müritz in Gotthun. This means you have both a marked section starting in Röbel and other trail options around the lake.
Fishing, surfing and sailing are also among the activities available in Gotthun. Before fishing, check permit requirements and local regulations. If you plan to surf or sail, confirm access arrangements locally. The Müritz is the shared setting for these activities, so when planning your day, you can weigh up time spent being active on land against time on the water.
Camping and Getting There
The Nitschow and Hirschberg campsites near Gotthun offer pitches for tents, caravans and motorhomes. At Müritzcamp Gotthun, the water of the Müritz gets deeper only gradually, making it suitable for children to swim. Check local swimming conditions on arrival. The pitches available and campsite operations may also change, so check before booking whether your preferred camping option is currently available. If you are travelling with different needs, it is helpful to consider these camping options separately from the other activities in the village, rather than assuming that all accommodation has the same features.
Gotthun can be reached by car via the A 19 Berlin–Rostock, taking the Röbel exit.
Nature in the Mecklenburg Lake District
The Mecklenburg Lake District also offers further nature-related experiences beyond Gotthun itself. Müritz National Park is part of this region, whose landscape is characterised by forests, bogs, lakes and broad meadows. Its hiking trail covers different landscape types and features over nine stages: it follows lakeshores, passes through ancient forests and by inland dunes, and leads to the source of the Havel. This is a regional hiking route in its own right and should not be confused with the 9.0-kilometre section of the Müritz Circular Route from Röbel to Gotthun.
Another nature experience in the Mecklenburg Lake District is the Damerower Werder bison reserve. It lies on a peninsula in Lake Kölpin, where visitors can watch bison. The reserve also has a forest discovery trail with climbing features, an ant house, an exhibition with touch-and-see panels, and a dendrophone. These regional attractions complement Gotthun’s immediate connection to the Müritz and its culture, but are not features of the village itself.
