Rechlin between aviation history and boating experiences
Accommodation in Rechlin
Discover Rechlin through three distinct themes: aviation history, boating opportunities, and cycling and hiking trails. The Aviation Technology Museum, the marina in Rechlin-Nord and the places within the municipality each showcase a different side of the destination.
Aviation History and Remembrance
The Rechlin Aviation Technology Museum is housed in the historic buildings of the Luftwaffe testing facility of the Third Reich, Northern Group. Its exhibition traces Rechlin’s aviation history from the beginnings of flight in 1918. It covers the Flight Testing and Training Establishment on Lake Müritz and the RDLI testing facility, as well as the Luftwaffe testing facility from 1934 onwards.
Further exhibitions focus on the post-war history of the site: its use by the NVA until 1990 and by the Red Army until 1993. The Rechlin shipyard and the history of the town up to the present day are also among the topics. One exhibit links technological history with the shipyard: the museum displays the best-preserved boat from a series of which only four examples remain. Guided tours are available by prior arrangement; please book a time in advance.
In Retzow/Rechlin, the Ravensbrück concentration camp subcamp memorial commemorates the history of the place. It has undergone extensive renovation. During the work, the outlines of five barracks were uncovered and a new path was created so that people with disabilities and older people can visit the memorial.
Boats and Trails for an Active Holiday
Hafendorf Müritz, with a modern marina and around 400 berths, is located in Rechlin-Nord. At Hafendorf, you can rent motorboats without a licence or prior experience. Canoes, rowing boats and pedal boats are also available for hire. Seasonal availability may vary; check with the relevant operator before making plans.
There are also ways to spend your days actively on land: Rechlin has well-developed cycling and hiking trails. When planning your stay, you can decide whether boating, walking and cycling tours, or the town’s history will be your main focus. This makes it possible to fit the different themes into your own travel plans without prescribing a particular route.
Boek: Memorial Site, Church and Connection with Nature
The Rechlin district of Boek is the southern gateway to Müritz National Park. The listed St John’s Church is also located there. The two places offer different points of interest: Boek combines a connection with the national park with a protected church building and the memorial site at Bolter Schleuse.
At the Bolter Schleuse fishing and angling farm, visitors can watch typical fish in an observation pond from the terrace and lure them to the surface with a little food. There are also several fishing ponds across an area of more than ten hectares. If you plan a visit, check seasonal opening arrangements and any booking requirements in advance.
Getting Your Bearings and Finding Accommodation
In Rechlin town centre, you will find a tourist information office and a market square. The waterfront promenade with its pier and restaurants, as well as the boat moorings, have also been redesigned. Together with Hafendorf Müritz in Rechlin-Nord and the destinations in Boek mentioned above, these local landmarks provide concrete reference points for sorting out your interests before looking for accommodation. First consider whether you want to focus your trip mainly on the museum, boating opportunities, trails or the places in Boek.
Mecklenburg Lake District: Nature in a Broader Context
The Mecklenburg Lake District also offers its own regional natural setting. Müritz National Park is part of this region, which is characterised by forests, bogs, lakes and wide meadows. The Müritz National Park Hiking Trail explores the park’s landscape types and special features over nine stages. It runs along lakes, through ancient forests, past inland dunes and to the source of the Havel.
Certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours through Müritz National Park. These include guided tours of the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest in Serrahn and tours from the water. These regional experiences complement a visit to Rechlin without being presented as the same as the local attractions.
