Kieve: Village History on the Upper Elde
Accommodation in Kieve
Kieve lies on the upper Elde and combines village history with opportunities to experience the water and landscape in the surrounding area. The 13th-century church, the traditional half-timbered house and the lakes around the village offer different possible focal points for your stay.
Landscape around Kieve
The Großer Kiever See is close to Kieve and covers an area of around 17 hectares. South of Kieve, the gently rolling landscape is already part of the Wittstock-Ruppiner Heide. The Glambeck See is also nearby: this clear-water lake covers 45 hectares and is up to 22 metres deep. Its public bathing area is about three kilometres from Kieve. This means the lake and bathing area on the one hand, and the gently rolling heathland on the other, offer different ways to experience nature around the village.
Church and rural architectural history
The church in Kieve dates from the 13th century. This early Gothic building is made of fieldstone and brick, with a wooden bell tower adjoining it on the west side. The church is now a listed building, as is the rectory in Kieve. A typical smallholder’s house in the village is a half-timbered terraced house from the first half of the 18th century; it now houses an inn. The buildings illustrate different chapters in the village’s history: medieval church construction and 18th-century rural half-timbered architecture.
Enjoy the water
The Elde in the surrounding area is considered suitable for canoe trips. This offers a different way to enjoy the water than the public bathing area at Glambeck See: here, the focus is on a possible trip on the river, while there it is on time spent by the lake. Both options can help you decide what kind of stay you are looking for, without treating them as a single activity.
Village life and events
Kieve has held its annual harvest festival since 1946. The community centre opened on 2 August 2024 and is the social and cultural hub for residents. Regular events are intended to bring it to life. The hall is about 91 square metres in size and has room for approximately 60 people. It can be used for various kinds of events; visitors from outside the village may also use it under a usage agreement. The centre is therefore both a place for local community life and a possible venue for events, subject to prior agreement.
Regional cuisine
Dorfkrug Kieve serves freshly prepared German cuisine, with a weekly changing menu. Examples include roast duck, game goulash and zander. As the menu changes, ask about the current selection before your visit. It is also advisable to check in advance whether the inn in the historic half-timbered house is open.
Getting around and choosing accommodation
The ELLI neighbourhood transport service can be booked in advance by phone. There is no fare, but drivers appreciate a donation. ELLI connects the villages in the region with destinations including Röbel, Wittstock and Müritztherme. Arrange your desired trip by phone. When choosing accommodation, it is also worth considering Kieve itself and the individual nearby destinations as separate locations: the church and community centre are in the village, while the bathing area at Glambeck See is about three kilometres away.
More nature experiences in the Mecklenburg Lake District
As a broader travel destination, the Mecklenburg Lake District offers further opportunities to enjoy the landscape. Müritz National Park is characterised by forests, moors, lakes and expansive meadows. Its hiking trail explores the park’s landscape types and distinctive features over nine stages, passing lakes, through ancient forests, by inland dunes and to the source of the Havel. Certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours, including guided walks in the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest of Serrahn and tours from the water. These regional options complement Kieve’s history and connections to the water with further nature and hiking experiences in the Mecklenburg Lake District.
