Discover Eixen: Lake and Church Art
Accommodation in Eixen
Eixen offers two distinct ways to experience a stay: Lake Eixen is all about views, observing nature and activities on the water; the village church turns the focus to architectural and art history. This lets you tailor your trip to the interests that matter to you, without having to focus on just one theme.
At Lake Eixen: views, nature and activity
Lake Eixen lies within the municipality of Eixen. A 10 m-high observation tower in the municipality offers an idyllic view over the lake. The area by Lake Eixen has a bathing beach, a volleyball court, and a jetty for swimming and fishing. Birdwatching and nature observation are also possible there. This offers several options: you can focus on nature or make use of the facilities for swimming, volleyball and fishing.
The lake is also a specific point of interest for cycling trips: the area is connected to cycling routes. The “Around Semlow” cycling tour passes through Eixen and includes a detour to Lake Eixen.
Village church and medieval art
Eixen village church is a fieldstone building dating from the mid-13th century. Brick gables and brick window surrounds—the frames around the windows—complete its appearance. Some of the painted decoration also dates back to the 13th century and was uncovered again during restoration. The church thus reveals different facets of its history through its architecture and surviving paintings.
The winged altarpiece offers further art-historical details: its front depicts saints, the Coronation of the Virgin and Saint George; the reverse features panel paintings. The altarpiece was probably carved in LĂĽbeck around 1530. The approximate dating and cautious attribution go hand in hand. For anyone interested in religious art, the imagery and the design of both sides offer specific points of interest.
Another dated work of art is the pulpit in St. George’s Church in Eixen. It was made in 1744 in the workshop of Michel Müller, a Stralsund woodcarver. Together with the medieval architectural features and the winged altarpiece, this detail shows how cultural interests in Eixen can span different periods.
The lake festival in August
The annual lake festival held at Lake Eixen in August features the fireworks display “Lake Eixen in Flames.” Dates and programme may vary. If the festival is one of the reasons for your trip, check the specific date and programme before making plans. This allows you to take the event’s fixed timing into account without making the entire stay revolve around it.
Plan your stay and accommodation search
If you’re travelling in August, you can also factor the lake festival into your plans. Once you’ve prioritised your interests, you can tailor your accommodation search to your own travel plans.
In the wider destination of Vorpommern-RĂĽgen
The wider cultural setting may also be of interest when planning your trip: the district in the wider destination of Vorpommern-Rügen is known, among other things, for the Störtebeker Festival. Vorpommern-Rügen district is estimated to have around 60 museums.
