Tribsees offers a range of ways to tailor your stay to your interests: St. Thomas Church is known for its mill altar and historic furnishings, the Western Pomerania Potato Museum adds a cultural dimension of its own, and canoe hire is available at the waterside rest area. When choosing accommodation, it is worth first considering whether church art, a museum visit or time spent canoeing is your priority. The specific features of these destinations can help you decide what kind of trip you want.

Church art at St. Thomas Church

St. Thomas Church in Tribsees is known for its unique mill altar: no other church has a carved altar featuring the mill motif. The church was first mentioned in a document in 1245. Its other furnishings also provide precise historical points of reference. The church’s new organ, built by Karl August Buchholz of Berlin, was first played at Christmas in 1831. The church houses seven carved reliefs from a pulpit in St. James’ Church in Lübeck; they date from 1547.

An epitaph depicts the Last Judgment, is surrounded by 25 coats of arms and is dedicated to Christian von KĂĽssow, who died in 1577. A bell cast in 1485, from the former St. JĂĽrgen Chapel, is also housed in St. Thomas Church. Together, these artefacts span the history of woodcarving and remembrance, as well as music and bells. The church is also on the Via Baltica, the Baltic Sea branch of the Way of St. James. Its location on this route adds a pilgrimage dimension to its cultural and historical significance.

A distinctive museum experience

The Western Pomerania Potato Museum in Tribsees is considered the only potato museum in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Its subject offers a different perspective from the sacred artworks in St. Thomas Church. If you would like to combine different interests on your trip, you can choose between a museum visit and church art as distinct points of focus.

Canoeing and overnight stays at the waterside rest area

Canoe hire is available at the Tribsees waterside rest area. Overnight stays there are subject to a clear restriction: you can stay only in your own tent. The rest area has showers, toilets and Wi-Fi. Activity, facilities and type of accommodation are therefore important, but separate, considerations when planning. If you do not want to stay in your own tent, you should look for accommodation independently of what the rest area offers. Operator information may change; check it again before your trip.

You can plan your stay around your preferred focus: church art and the Via Baltica, the Potato Museum, or canoeing and a night in your own tent at the waterside rest area.
