Lindholz offers two very different starting points for planning a trip: seasonal herb cuisine at Kräuterhof Carlsthal and the history of Breesen. This gives you two different questions to consider when planning your holiday: Does your visit fit with the café’s opening season, and are you interested in historical dates? When choosing accommodation in Lindholz, the time of year you travel can therefore be just as important as the focus you want to give your stay.

Seasonal dining at Kräuterhof Carlsthal

From April to October, you can enjoy country cuisine featuring herbs, vegetables, salad and flowers freshly picked from the garden at the café in the rustic barn at Kräuterhof Carlsthal on Saturdays. Coffee and cake round out the menu. The garden produce gives the café a distinctive culinary character that sets it apart from an ordinary café visit.

The season and day of the week are the main things to consider when planning your visit: the café is open on Saturdays from April to October. Before visiting, check whether the café is open on your preferred date.

Breesen and its historical dates

Breesen was first mentioned in a document in 1232. Breesen estate was owned by the Woltke family from 1308 to 1612. The dates mark different milestones: the first documented mention of the village predates the family’s later ownership of the estate, which lasted for more than three centuries. For those interested in history, this provides a clear timeline and a different focus from seasonal dining at Kräuterhof.

Vorpommern-Rügen: regional highlights

Rügen and the offshore islands of Hiddensee and Ummanz are part of the district of Vorpommern-Rügen; the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula chain is also located in the district. These geographical names mark different regional highlights. When finding your way around the district, specific place names help you put each topic into context.

The UNESCO World Heritage Sites also offer different perspectives: the old town of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund is part of the World Heritage Site “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar.” The beech forests in Jasmund National Park on Rügen are part of the World Heritage Site “Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe.” The district thus spans everything from urban cultural heritage to natural heritage on Rügen.

The district has an estimated 60 or so museums. One art highlight is the Gallery in the Monastery in Ribnitz-Damgarten: it primarily displays contemporary regional art, as well as a permanent exhibition of prints by Lyonel Feininger. The district’s art collection is also preserved, cared for and managed there. It includes around 500 works of painting, graphic art, sculpture, ceramics, silk painting and textile art, ranging from the late 19th century to the present day. If you plan to visit the gallery, check the latest visitor information beforehand.

In Putbus, the Gallery in the Orangery presents up to eight exhibitions each year in a historic building in the heart of this city of art and culture. The program also includes readings and concerts. Traditionally, the gallery presents works from the Rügen Cultural Foundation collection at the end of the year; the collection comprises more than 1,500 exhibits. Before traveling, check which exhibitions and events are currently taking place.
