Mühlen Eichsen brings together the small Stepenitz River and a distinctive village setting: the village church stands on a steeply rising hill above the Stepenitz and the former watermill; opposite is the manor house, usually called the “castle” in the village. An old park surrounds the manor house. This gives your trip a clear focus: the river landscape, church architecture and local history can be explored as different aspects of the village.

The Stepenitz and former milling

In several places, the Stepenitz has been dammed to form lakes; there is also a bathing area. Water is therefore part of the village not only as a feature of the landscape, but also as a place to swim. The former watermill in Mühlen Eichsen is now a private residence; its milling equipment has not survived. It is a historical link to the river landscape, but no milling equipment remains to shape the village today. Those interested in how the watercourse and its former use are connected will find two different sides of the same local history here.

Village church, manor house and park

The village church in Mühlen Eichsen is a simple 14th-century Evangelical Lutheran Brick Gothic church. Its massive, square, late Gothic west tower has a hipped roof. For culturally minded travellers, this tower is a striking architectural detail: it combines a clearly recognisable form with the late Gothic period in which it was built. The manor house stands opposite the church and is surrounded by an old park. In Mühlen Eichsen, it is usually called the “castle”. The manor house and its associated park are listed in the Northwest Mecklenburg district monument register dated 28 February 2025.

Milestone and archaeological history

At the entrance to Mühlen Eichsen in the direction of Gadebusch, a milestone—a full-mile obelisk—stands on the northwest side of Gadebuscher Straße 15. The Northwest Mecklenburg district monument register dated 28 February 2025 also lists the watermill at Gadebuscher Straße 1. South of Mühlen Eichsen is a cremation burial ground with around 5,000 burials dating from about 600 BC to 100 AD. It is one of the most significant burial grounds in the core area of the Jastorf culture. The history of this area therefore extends far beyond the construction history of the village church.

Northwest Mecklenburg as a wider setting

Looking beyond Mühlen Eichsen, Northwest Mecklenburg offers a distinctive landscape and cultural setting of its own. In the north, the district includes the “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay” landscape area; in the south, it includes the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin”. Terminal moraine ridges, gently rolling ground moraine plateaus, steep and gently sloping coastal stretches, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains shape the region’s landscape. The municipality of Mühlen Eichsen is crossed by federal highway B 208, which runs from Ratzeburg via Gadebusch to Wismar.

The wider destination’s cultural history has its own attractions, too: Gadebusch Castle in Gadebusch is a Renaissance castle dating from 1573 and a rare example of Mecklenburg or North German Brick Renaissance. Its features include reliefs in the regional Johann Albrecht style. Another side of the region can be seen in the “Radegast Valley” landscape conservation area: it covers about 600 hectares between the southern edge of Rehna and Neddersee near Gadebusch. The area includes the Radegast’s strongly meandering, near-natural course, as well as adjoining grassland, reed beds, wooded areas and swamp forests.

When looking for accommodation, it helps to start by deciding what you want to focus on: should Mühlen Eichsen itself be the main focus, or would you rather choose Northwest Mecklenburg as your wider destination? This lets you shape your trip around the subjects that interest you most.
