Veelböken: Forests, Storks and Manor House History
Accommodation in Veelböken
Extensive forest areas, pairs of storks in the villages and a nearby lake give Veelböken a strong connection to nature. There is also a designated cycle route, the “Bauernstube” restaurant and buildings with varied histories. If you are looking for accommodation, you can consider whether forests, swimming, cycling or architectural heritage should be the main focus of your trip.
Forests, Storks and Lake Vietlübbe
Extensive forests around Veelböken have been barely touched by humans. They provide a refuge for white-tailed eagles. The villages, too, share a recurring natural feature: several pairs of storks nest there and return each spring. Spring is therefore associated with the storks’ return, while the forests shape the character of the surrounding landscape.
Nearby Lake Vietlübbe invites residents and visitors to swim. Forests, storks and the opportunity to swim offer different ways to shape a stay. If you want to bring together several interests in your travel group, you can consider these side by side when planning, rather than centering your stay on just one kind of outing.
Cycle Route and Getting Around
The 4.9-kilometre Sievershagen–Rambeel section is part of the regional cycle routes R 1 and Tour 7. It runs through the municipalities of Hanshagen and Veelböken. This makes a specific cycle route part of the regional options; its designated length helps you assess it as a separate element of your travel plans. Independently of this, federal highway 208 runs through the municipal area of Veelböken and has been upgraded in recent years.
The “Bauernstube” restaurant in the district of Paetrow, on federal highway 208, serves food and drinks. This allows you to tailor your search to the kind of stay you have in mind.
Manor Houses and Architectural History
Veelböken Manor House is designated as a care home. The building is single-storey and plastered, and stands on a low fieldstone base; a two-storey corner tower completes its architecture. In Hindenberg, a manor house, the linden avenue with its circular linden grove, two barns and a stable building are listed monuments. A manor house at Lindenallee 3 is also among Hindenberg’s buildings.
Frauenmark, too, has a history that can be read in its surviving buildings: the estate no longer exists. Its only surviving barn was converted into a residential building. This is a different architectural situation from the manor house in Veelböken and the listed monuments in Hindenberg.
At KunstOffen, from 23 to 25 May 2026, Veelböken presented unique jewellery and small series in silver and gold, featuring unusual gemstones, by Gudrun Vollborn, as well as woodwork and photo cards by Wolfgang Albeck. The presentations also included household objects, drums, other objects and nature photographs, especially macro shots of flowers and insects.
Northwest Mecklenburg as a Wider Travel Region
Those who also want to explore Northwest Mecklenburg as a broader travel destination will find a range of landscapes there: the “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay” lie in the north, and the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin” in the south. The district’s landscape is shaped by terminal moraine ridges, gently undulating ground moraine plateaus, steep and gently sloping coastlines, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains.
Nature and architectural heritage also sit side by side at this broader regional level. The “Radegast Valley” landscape protection area covers approximately 600 hectares between Rehna’s southern outskirts and Lake Neddersee near Gadebusch. It includes the Radegast’s highly meandering, natural course, as well as adjacent grassland, reed beds, groves and wet woodlands. Gadebusch is home to Gadebusch Castle, a Renaissance castle dating from 1573 and a rare example of Mecklenburg or North German Brick Gothic Revival, with reliefs in the regional Johann Albrecht style.
