Nature and culture come together in Krembz: forests and moors sit alongside the history of manor houses, churches and villages. When planning your trip, you can decide how much to focus on the landscape versus historic village settings, rather than building your stay around just one theme.

Moors and landscape in Krembz

Part of the municipality of Krembz lies within Schaalsee Nature Park. Krembz is near Lake Schaalsee, in a hilly part of northwestern Mecklenburg; several districts are considered part of the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve. Forests are also part of the wider municipal area. The nature park, forests and moors offer different ways to explore the landscape. Across the wider travel destination of Northwest Mecklenburg, the landscape is shaped by terminal moraine ridges, gently rolling ground moraine plateaus, coastal stretches, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains. To the north lies the Northwest Mecklenburg hill country, with Wismar Bay; to the south is the West Mecklenburg Lake District, with Lake Schwerin.

The northern part of the Schönwolde Moor lies within the municipality of Krembz. Schönwolde Moor is considered Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s only raised bog with an almost undisturbed peat profile. It cannot be entered because there are no paths. Neuendorfer Moor Nature Reserve lies one kilometre east of Krembz. If you are planning nature activities, check the protected-area boundaries and descriptions in advance.

Manor houses, church and village history

Groß Salitz Manor House was built in the second half of the 17th century and is one of the oldest manor houses in Mecklenburg. The church in Groß Salitz dates from the early 13th century and contains a number of works of art. The two buildings, which are very different in age, each provide a distinct point of entry into the village’s history.

The village layout is also part of its historic character: Groß Salitz has a largely intact historic village structure, and Stöllnitz is home to several well-preserved farmhouses. In the Krembz area, the restored Schönwolde Hunting Lodge is a privately owned attraction. Concerts and events are held there occasionally. Since 2021, Groß Salitz Manor House has also hosted cultural events, including concerts, readings and children’s concerts. Event programmes may change; check dates before planning a visit.

Cycling and regional orientation

Cycle Route 7 – North Shore of Lake Schaalsee starts at Gadebusch railway station and is approximately 43 kilometres long. The churches in Groß Salitz are listed as attractions along the route. Another way to visit Groß Salitz is through the FahrradKulTourKirche Groß Salitz project, which invites cyclists, walkers and pilgrim groups to stop. If you plan to make use of the project, find out in advance which facilities are currently available on site. As a regional travel note, there is no Deutsche Bahn railway station within the Schaalsee UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Then make your further selections based on your specific plans and the information provided for each offer.
