Loissin: Castle History, Natural Beach and Water Sports
Accommodation in Loissin
Loissin brings together historic buildings, a natural beach and the Greifswalder Bodden. This means there are different themes to consider when planning your trip: the castle’s history in the district of Ludwigsburg, the waterside landscape and courses in various water sports. Deciding which of these you want to shape your stay is a useful starting point when choosing accommodation.
Castle history in Ludwigsburg
Ludwigsburg Castle is located in the district of Ludwigsburg in the municipality of Loissin and is one of the most significant historic monuments in Western Pomerania. The estate includes a three-storey, plastered Renaissance building with the floor plan of a Latin cross. Its unusual ground plan gives the building a distinct architectural form while also identifying it as a Renaissance structure. Those interested in the region’s history and architecture will find a tangible point of connection here, within the municipality.
The castle chapel is also one of the region’s defining architectural and cultural monuments. It was built in 1708 and renovated from 2014 to 2018. Remains of a late Baroque garden can be seen south of the castle. The building, chapel and garden remains thus represent different aspects of the historic ensemble: Renaissance architecture, a religious building from the early 18th century and traces of later garden design.
Another glimpse into the past can be found at the Weissenborn Mausoleum in the cemetery in Ludwigsburg. On 7 September 2018, an exhibition about the 42 surviving funerary chapels and mausoleums in Western Pomerania opened there. It was designed as a permanent summer exhibition.
The Bodden coast and water sports
Loissin’s landscape also includes the natural beach in the district of Ludwigsburg. The Loissin surf spot is right on the Greifswalder Bodden. These two coastal attractions offer a different focus from the historic sites: here, the emphasis is on the water and activities on the Bodden rather than architectural history.
At Loissin on the Greifswalder Bodden, kitesafe.de offers professional courses in kitesurfing, wingfoiling and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). Several water sports are available, so you can choose according to your interests. If a course is an important part of your travel plans, check its availability before you arrive.
Getting around by bike and on foot
Three tourist information boards with maps of the surrounding area have been installed in all three districts of Loissin. They help visitors find their way when cycling and hiking along the Bodden coast. The maps make the surrounding area part of your planning, while the sights and interests mentioned in Loissin itself offer different points of focus. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore first decide which of these themes will be central to your stay: castle history, the natural beach or water sports.
Another cultural highlight in Vorpommern-Greifswald
In the wider travel region of Vorpommern-Greifswald, the Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald displays the Croy Tapestry, dating from 1554. It is considered a unique cultural and historical artefact from the Reformation era. The exhibit offers a different way to explore regional history than the Renaissance architecture and chapel in Ludwigsburg: here, the focus is on a single historic work of art. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are especially interested in buildings and garden remains, the Bodden coast or cultural and historical collections.
