Brünzow can be explored through its distinct places and varied interests: in Vierow, cycling routes pass through the village, while the small industrial harbour and natural beach offer their own points of reference for planning a trip. In Stilow, a listed manor house adds a cultural and historical perspective. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider whether cycling and the coastal landscape, or other destinations in the wider Vorpommern-Greifswald travel region, will shape your stay.

Cycling to different destinations

The Baltic Sea Cycle Route passes directly through Vierow and continues to Greifswald and the island of Usedom. Two routes are described for cycling locally: one leads from the Teufelsstein car park along a field path to Vierow harbour. The alternative follows the cycle path alongside the road to Vierow, then continues through the village to Gahlkow. These destinations give you a clear choice of direction: Vierow harbour on the first route or Gahlkow on the second. This makes it possible to distinguish local route planning from the longer Baltic Sea Cycle Route. Check the condition of the paths locally when planning your trip.

Natural beach, harbour and lagoon

Vierow’s natural beach is located close to the small industrial harbour of Vierow and about 2 km from the village of Vierow. It can be reached via a walking and cycling path. There is a notable boundary in the coastal area at the harbour: the seaward side of the Vierow harbour grounds borders the Natura 2000 site “Greifswalder Bodden, parts of the Strelasund and the northern tip of Usedom”.

In spring and autumn, migratory birds rest in the shallow waters of the Greifswalder Bodden near Brünzow and gather there before continuing their journey. This seasonal connection with nature differs from the paths and destinations around Vierow: in spring and autumn, resting birds shape the character of the Bodden landscape, while the cycling route, harbour and beach appeal to other interests.

Cultural heritage in Vierow and Stilow

A drawing by Caspar David Friedrich dated 3 June 1818 depicts two fishing boats and nets hung out to dry on Vierow’s natural beach. It captures a specific coastal scene: the boats and nets focus attention on the work shown on the beach, not just on the landscape. Another cultural and historical point of interest is the manor house in Stilow, which is a listed building. Together, the drawing and the protected building offer two different connections to the history of these places.

More options in the wider Vorpommern-Greifswald travel region

Beyond Brünzow, the wider Vorpommern-Greifswald travel region offers other themes in their own distinct locations. The district’s three nature parks cover almost 40% of its area. Regional cycling routes for exploring the district include the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, the Szczecin Lagoon Loop and the Route of North German Romanticism. The Baltic Sea Cycle Route is part of the EuroVelo EV10 route.

Those interested in culture can find more points of interest in Greifswald and Anklam: the Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald exhibits the Croy Tapestry of 1554, a unique cultural and historical artefact from the Reformation period. The Otto Lilienthal Museum in Anklam is a technical museum devoted to the aviation pioneer, mechanical engineer and humanist Otto Lilienthal. The Juliett U-461 is moored in Peenemünde harbour as a museum and can be explored on a tour. Nature and wildlife experiences are also part of the regional offering: the Ueckermünde Heath is ideal for walking, cycling and horse riding. More than 1,120 native and exotic animals representing 95 species live at Ueckermünde Zoo; feeding demonstrations take place daily. Check the current schedule of feeding demonstrations when planning your visit.
