Mesekenhagen is a picturesque Bodden community close to woodland and water. Its nature and culture offer a range of themes, from the Karrendorfer Wiesen and the Mesekenhagen polder to hiking trails, wildlife watching and events in Gristow. With its tower and cultural events, Gristow Church adds another dimension. This gives you a concrete choice of different themes when planning your trip: birdlife and landscapes, exploring the nature park on foot, or culture at the church.

Meadows, Moorland and Bird Migration

The Karrendorfer Wiesen cover 365 hectares and are part of the “Insel Koos, Kooser See und Wampener Riff” nature reserve. During the migration season, they are an important stopover for waders and waterbirds. If you choose birdlife as a theme for your trip, the migration season gives you a specific seasonal reference point for planning. Between Jager, Kirchdorf and Mesekenhagen, the Mesekenhagen polder contains around 600 hectares of moorland with deep peat. A network of ditches and a pumping station drain the area into the Gristower Wieck. The polder contains numerous legally protected biotopes, as well as parts of several Natura 2000 sites designated under the Habitats Directive. Mesekenhagen therefore offers a range of nature themes, from seasonal bird stopovers to peat soils, water management and protected habitats.

Hiking Trails, Wildlife and Tradition in Gristow

In the Gristow Nature Experience Park, 9 km of hiking trails pass through a variety of biotopes. The trail network has a clear focus on walking and landscapes. Around 300 animals can be observed there, including sheep, goats, horses and fallow deer. So the park’s appeal is not limited to walking through the biotopes: wildlife watching is a focus in its own right, alongside hiking. The nature park also hosts the traditional horseback barrel-rolling event every year.

Tower Views and Culture at Gristow Church

The tower of Gristow Church has about 141 steps; in good weather, views extend across the Gristower Wieck to Greifswald and Rügen. The church is also used for art events, concerts and readings. The views and cultural events appeal to different interests: you can factor in a view across the landscape as well as an event. If a concert or reading is the reason for your trip, check the date in advance.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

The seasonal timings vary: the Karrendorfer Wiesen are an important stopover during the migration season; the barrel-rolling event takes place every year; and good weather is needed for the view from the tower. If you are planning to visit for a specific festival or event at the church, check the exact date in advance. When searching for accommodation in Mesekenhagen, you can weigh up whether a seasonal nature experience, an event date, or your interest in hiking trails, wildlife and culture will be the deciding factor.
