Levenhagen: Chapel, Cycle Path and Farm Shop
Accommodation in Levenhagen
Levenhagen surprises visitors with a pilgrimage chapel whose interior measures just under 3 m². It is considered the smallest surviving chapel of its kind in the regional church—a remarkable size for a place with a long church history.
Chapel and Church: History Across Different Eras
The pilgrimage chapel dates from the second half of the 15th century. The church in Levenhagen also has its own medieval history: it dates back to the 13th century. Its altarpiece dates from 1646. The building period and furnishings thus offer different perspectives on the town’s religious heritage.
An interactive tour titled “Experience: Pilgrimage to Levenhagen” was described in 2019 as an audio guide with a multimedia listening station. It led visitors through St Mary’s Chapel, the church and its grounds, and included 22 stops. To use it as described at the time, visitors had to download the free “DigiWalk” app to a smartphone.
Cycling and Local Attractions
Levenhagen is 6 km west of Greifswald. A completed cycle path connects the town with Greifswald and runs alongside the regional road in the direction of Grimmen. If you are planning a bike tour, it is a good idea to check the current route conditions, as they can change.
For a taste of regional produce, Levenhagen has a farm shop selling meat and honey. The “Auszeit Hotel” sports and leisure centre also has an attached motel and bistro. The chapel, cycle path, farm shop and leisure centre each offer something different: you can shape your stay around local history, cycling or the town’s amenities.
