Evershagen combines a distinctive district history with architectural and artistic themes. From the late 1960s onwards, it was developed as an experimental district and served as a model for later satellite housing estates in Rostock.

Urban Planning Meets Art

Evershagen’s district centre was built between 1971 and 1977 under the direction of Peter Baumbach. It included an elaborate visual arts programme. The district’s development therefore brings together architectural and art history—an interesting focus for travellers interested in urban planning and art.

The list of protected monuments dated 7 April 2026 includes the Terrassenhaus Evershagen at Bertolt-Brecht-Straße 8–10, together with the surrounding open spaces, as a listed building. It also includes three gable designs: “Air” at Fridtjof-Nansen-Straße 5a, “Sun” at Knud-Rasmussen-Straße 12 and “Earth” at Strindbergstraße 1. Their titles alone give the district’s architectural history a thematic focus.

The former Schutow exhibition grounds, which are part of Evershagen, also form part of its historical context. In 1966, the Bauwesen pavilion was built there as a hyperbolic paraboloid shell structure by Ulrich Müther, based on an architectural design by Erich Kaufmann. Chronologically, the building predates the development of the district centre between 1971 and 1977. Evershagen’s architectural history thus encompasses different projects and periods of construction.

Walking Tours and Getting Out Together

Walking tours focusing on local architectural and art history are held regularly in Evershagen. Ronald Paris’ mural “On Man’s Responsibility” at the “Am Scharren” shopping centre is also back in the spotlight: discussions have resumed about possibly recreating it at its original location. This is a possibility, not a recreation that has already taken place.

Another annual event is “Picnic in the Urban Green” in the park by Mühlenteich on Messestraße. The event offers an informative, active and relaxing afternoon for the whole family. If you would like to include the picnic in your plans, check the date of that year’s event.

Rostock as a Broader Travel Destination

As part of the wider travel destination of Rostock, Evershagen’s history sits within a broader historical context: Rostock has a history spanning more than 800 years, is one of the traditional Hanseatic cities on the Baltic Sea and was once an important trading centre in northern Germany. A walking tour of Rostock’s historic centre takes in, among other places, Universitätsplatz, the Monastery of the Holy Cross and Kröpeliner Straße, as well as Neuer Markt and St Mary’s Church. The tour focuses on architecture, urban development and Hanseatic traditions. This gives you a choice of different themes when planning your trip: the history of the experimental district of Evershagen or Rostock’s historic centre.
