Göhren has a distinctive coastline: The wooded Nordperd rises up to 60 metres above sea level and forms the easternmost point of the island of Rügen. Fine sand and a gently sloping shoreline shape the impression of the beach. The village church and the Buskam erratic boulder add architecture and local history to the coastal landscape.

Nordperd: woodland and views

A high-cliff circular hiking trail runs around Göhren’s Nordperd, offering views across the Baltic Sea. If you would like to include a hike in your trip, the circular trail is a specific option alongside a day at the beach. The woodland also shapes the character of this landscape: it lies within the core zone of the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve and remains largely untouched. This brings different aspects of nature into view—the trail with its Baltic Sea views and the largely untouched woodland.

Beach and pier: two coastal features

Göhren’s fine sandy beach slopes gently into the water, making it especially suitable for little explorers and adventurers. For families taking the character of the shoreline into account when planning their trip, this is a useful point to consider. A different coastal story is told by the 450-metre-long pier at the foot of Nordperd, right on the Baltic Sea. It was built in 1907 and 1908 to protect the cliff. Its length, construction dates and purpose put the cliff and its protective structure in focus—a different emphasis from the sandy beach and gently sloping shore.

Erratic boulder and village church

The name Buskam comes from the Old Slavic “bogis kamin” and means “God’s stone”. Small hollows on the upper surface of the erratic boulder suggest that the stone may already have been used as a place of worship in the Bronze Age. Göhren’s village church was consecrated in 1930. The simply designed, single-nave church has two red-tile-roofed towers. The two features also differ in age: possible Bronze Age use is associated with Buskam, while the church’s consecration date is given as 1930.

Getting around Göhren

The BUSkam local bus runs through Göhren’s town centre, from the North Beach to the South Beach. If you plan to use the bus as part of your day, check current timetables and operating periods in advance. The similarly spelled names refer to different things: BUSkam is the local bus, while Buskam is the erratic boulder with its name’s history and possible Bronze Age use.

Vorpommern-Rügen in a wider context

The cultural landscape extends beyond Göhren: In the wider destination of Vorpommern-Rügen, the district is known, among other things, for the Störtebeker Festival. It is also home to an estimated 60 museums. The festival and the number of museums form part of the regional context; the village church and Buskam, by contrast, are specific cultural and historical features of Göhren.
