Sellin combines maritime themes with spa architecture and nature at Lake Sellin. At the pier, the diving gondola offers a glimpse into the Baltic Sea’s habitat; Wilhelmstraße draws the eye to magnificent buildings from the early days of spa architecture and the 30-metre-high cliffs. Museums add amber and the history of fishermen and seafarers to the picture. This lets you plan your stay around the coast, culture or outdoor activities.

Discover the Baltic Sea

The diving gondola at Sellin Pier offers a glimpse into the Baltic Sea’s habitat and the animal and plant life found there. What you can observe depends on visibility and the season. The diving gondola also screens a 3D underwater film about the Baltic Sea. If you are interested in the sea, there are two different ways to explore it here: observing the underwater world, which varies depending on conditions, and watching it portrayed on film.

Spa architecture and paths to the coast

With its magnificent buildings from the early days of spa architecture, Wilhelmstraße leads to the 30-metre-high cliffs. You can reach Sellin Pier or the promenade at the South Beach via the steep “Himmelsleiter” (Stairway to Heaven) or by lift. The street puts historic architecture centre stage; to continue on to the pier or promenade, you can choose between the stairs and the lift. This makes Wilhelmstraße a great focus for anyone looking to combine architecture and coastal walks in Sellin.

Maritime history and amber

Since 2010, the Seefahrerhaus Museum has been housed in a thatched half-timbered house on Lake Sellin. It offers a vivid impression of the working and living conditions of fishermen and seafarers in times gone by. Numerous exhibits of maritime folk culture and nautical equipment are displayed across 120 square metres. A visit thus combines everyday history with objects associated with seafaring.

The Sellin Amber Museum in the centre of town offers a different subject. It is considered the only amber museum on the island of Rügen. Together with the Seefahrerhaus, these offer two distinct themes to choose from when planning your cultural activities: maritime working and living environments on the one hand, and amber on the other. If you are travelling with varied interests, you can treat these themes as separate stops in your Sellin itinerary.

Nature around Lake Sellin

Nearby, southwest of the seaside resort of Sellin, a walking route around Lake Sellin passes through the Neuensiener and Selliner See nature reserve. The area is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna that you can observe. A roughly ten-kilometre route around the lake can begin at the harbour in Sellin. The approximate distance provides a guide for planning; local trail conditions may change, so it is advisable to check them before setting out.

This way, you can start with a specific travel interest instead of choosing accommodation solely based on a general type of holiday.

Culture on a larger scale: Vorpommern-Rügen

On a broader cultural level, Vorpommern-Rügen is known, among other things, for the Störtebeker Festival. The district of Vorpommern-Rügen is estimated to have around 60 museums. This wider perspective complements the look at Sellin’s own maritime museums with the broader cultural context of the district.
