Torgelow combines dense mixed forests and the landscape of the UeckermĂĽnde Heath with traces of medieval and industrial history. There are also events and activities on the water. When planning your trip, you can choose your own focus between cultural discoveries, nature and activity.

Forest, Christ Church and Castrum Turglowe

Torgelow lies in the Ueckermünde Heath and is surrounded by dense mixed forests. In the town, Christ Church is a historical landmark: it was consecrated on 3 April 1884 and is considered Torgelow’s visual landmark. The Castrum Turglowe open-air museum takes visitors back to a different era. Around the medieval castle ruins in the town centre, it illustrates ways of life in the High Middle Ages. The church and museum thus offer different ways to explore the history of the town.

Castrum Turglowe also includes a multimedia exhibition in the Villa von Torgelow, at FriedrichstraĂźe 1. It opened in 2013 and is dedicated to Otto IV, Margrave of Brandenburg. Dioramas illustrate the life of a nobleman in the 13th century. If you plan to visit this exhibition, check the current access arrangements in advance.

Events and active experiences

Castrum Turglowe’s annual major events include occasions such as those held at Pentecost and the castle festival in August. The programme includes, among other things, horseback jousting tournaments and staged scenes on the tournament grounds. Craft demonstrations and the sale of clay jugs or wicker goods complement the historical themes with demonstrations and handmade products. Check the exact event dates before your visit.

In Ukranenland, visitors can take a boat trip on the first reconstructed Slavic boat in Germany. Passengers must row themselves, so the trip is an active excursion rather than simply a ride on the water. Check whether the boat trip is being offered before planning your visit.

The water touring rest area in Torgelow also offers practical support for boat trips: a small boat trailer is available there to transport boats to the floating pontoon at the end of the old Uecker river arm. If you plan to use the trailer, check its availability in advance. If you prefer to travel on foot, the Torgelow circular hiking trail offers a marked route: it is indicated by a green horizontal stripe on a white background.

Traces of the ironworks

The Hüttenwerkplatz, the former central square of the ironworks, lies in the vicinity of Torgelow. It includes the Faktorhaus and the belfry. The ironworks’ blast furnace, built in 1756 at the Hüttenwerkplatz, was the first of its kind in Pomerania. The two bells in the bell tower also tell of the local industrial history: they were cast in 1811 at the Torgelow ironworks from bog iron ore. Together, these details point to different aspects of the former ironworking industry, from the blast furnace to the casting of the bells.

Vorpommern-Greifswald as the wider setting

The wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald includes three nature parks, which cover almost 40 percent of the district. The Ueckermünde Heath invites visitors to hike, cycle and ride. Torgelow itself lies in the heath and is surrounded by mixed forest; these activities also give an idea of the variety of the wider natural area. When deciding on your trip, you can distinguish between Torgelow’s specific historical and event-related attractions and the outdoor opportunities across the wider destination.
