Discover Pesch: Landscape and cultural traces
Accommodation in Pesch
Pesch is a rural settlement on the Quartbach. Orchards line the stream valley, and the village consists of two settlement centres. When choosing accommodation, you can take these rural features into account while also considering whether cultural history, landscapes or excursions in the wider travel destination of Nettersheim will shape your stay.
Landscape and cultural traces near Pesch
The stream valley with its orchards and the two settlement centres give Pesch a distinctive landscape setting. A cultural landmark near Pesch is on Addig Hill: the remains of the Heidentempel, a Roman temple complex, are located there. Local goddesses of protection and fertility, known as Matronae, were worshipped here. The history of the surrounding area thus goes back to Roman times.
The lives of two artists are also connected with Pesch. The painter Otto Pankok lived in the village from 1941 to 1946. The writer Jakob Kneip lived here until his death in 1958 and is buried in the Pesch cemetery. The connection with painting and literature adds a more recent cultural perspective to the Roman history of the nearby temple complex.
Excursions in the wider travel destination of Nettersheim
In the wider travel destination of Nettersheim, parts of a Roman settlement and the Roman road have been made visible in the landscape at the Archaeological Landscape Park. The approximately 4.5-kilometre circular trail starts at the Eifel Nature Centre and passes eight stations. Partial reconstructions there bring the results of excavations at the vicus of Nettersheim to life. The trail therefore combines a walk through the landscape with insights into Roman settlement history.
You can also explore the landscape from another starting point: From the Eifel Nature Centre in Nettersheim, orchid meadows, Roman temples and fossil-rich areas can be reached on foot or by bike via various adventure trails. The Via Velo cycle route is a 22.5-kilometre circular route with an estimated riding time of around two to three hours. The Eifel Nature Centre, with its tourist information office in Nettersheim, can be chosen as the starting point.
The 20-kilometre Eifel Herb Trail offers a different focus. It runs from the Eifelsteig in Nettersheim to Bad Münstereifel and introduces hikers to the local world of herbs and plants through all the senses. Nettersheim therefore offers a range of formats: an archaeological circular trail with stations, a cycling route in a loop and a themed hiking trail between two towns. The route distances and the approximate riding time for the Via Velo give you concrete points of reference for considering these options for your stay.
