Ahrhütte offers two very different reasons to take a closer look: the Eifalia Butterfly Garden focuses on observing animals, while the Adenau discovery tour draws attention to the Ahr landscape and the history of the former railway line. There is also the history of a chapel dating from the early 20th century. When choosing your accommodation, the mix you are looking for can help guide you: would you mainly like to observe animals, take a tour through the Upper Ahr Valley, or explore traces of history?

Butterflies and Animals at Eifalia

The “Eifalia” Butterfly Garden is located in Ahrhütte. In two halls, you can observe exotic butterflies, lizards, tortoises and birds up close. The rainforest house in particular is home to free-flying blue morpho butterflies and banana butterflies. The children’s area offers opportunities to play and explore; the butterfly garden is also accessible and has plenty of seating and a cafeteria.

From 1 May, a botanical outdoor garden also invites you to discover native butterflies. Eifalia therefore offers different ways to observe them: the animals in the two halls and native butterflies in the outdoor garden. For families, the children’s area provides an additional activity alongside observing the animals.

The Ahr Valley Railway and the Discovery Tour

The Adenau discovery tour is designed as a round trip along the Ahr. It leads through the Upper Ahr Valley between Fuchshofen, Müsch and Ahrhütte and follows the Ahr Cycle Path along the former railway line. Signs along the way provide information about the history of the Ahr Valley Railway. Other features include old stone retaining walls with resting niches, picturesque former railway station buildings and an old double signal.

Near Ahrhütte, the route of the railway line built in 1913 from Blankenheim-Wald to Ahrdorf ran through the area. It included Dollendorf station near Ahrhütte, railway embankments and bridges. On the tour, the Ahr landscape and tangible traces of former rail traffic come together. Unlike at Eifalia, where observing animals is the main focus, the tour combines exercise with information about the line’s history.

Chapel in Ahrhütte

The chapel in Ahrhütte dates from 1929/1930. St. Antonius Ahrhütte Chapel Community is located at Ahrtal 7, 53945 Blankenheim / Ahrhütte. The chapel’s date adds a distinct historical note alongside the traces of the older railway line and the experiences at the butterfly garden.

Blankenheim: Castle, Routes and Traditions

Other historical themes take centre stage in Blankenheim. The Counts’ Castle was originally built around 1115 as a hilltop castle and was gradually transformed from a medieval fortification into a Baroque palace. The Eifel Museum and the Shepherd’s Gate and St. George’s Gate are also among Blankenheim’s attractions.

The routes also differ in their purpose: the Ahr Cycle Path and the AhrSteig hiking trail begin at the source of the Ahr in Blankenheim; Stage 7 of the Eifelsteig long-distance hiking trail passes through the area. The Ahr Cycle Path between Blankenheim and Ahrbrück is passable throughout, with minor restrictions. Check the current route status before setting out. RadBus Route 899, “Upper Ahr Valley,” runs between Blankenheim and Ahrbrück; check the timetable before travelling.

Another occasion brings visitors to the Blankenheim Ghost Parade: it takes place every year on Carnival Saturday and starts at 7:11 p.m. at the pharmacy on Ahrstraße. Anyone can join in as a “ghost”; you will need a white bedsheet and a pitch torch. Check the specific event dates and packages before your trip.
