Schöneseiffen: Panoramic Views Across the Dreiborn Plateau
Accommodation in Schöneseiffen
Schöneseiffen lies on the Dreiborn Plateau above the Olef Valley. Its elevated position offers sweeping views of the landscape, while the village is also close to Eifel National Park. Schöneseiffen is part of the Drömmede “Highlands.” At almost 623 metres, Hollerscheid is the highest point on the Dreiborn Plateau.
Landscape and hiking trails around Schöneseiffen
Numerous waymarked hiking trails around Schöneseiffen lead from the open plateau down into the Olef valleys. Along the way, you will encounter contrasting landscapes: open uplands and valley areas. The nearby Olef Reservoir and Hellenthal Wildlife Park offer further opportunities to enjoy nature and leisure activities.
One specific route is the “Around Schöneseiffen (33)” circular hiking trail. It starts at Schafbach Mill and climbs to Schöneseiffen. From there, the six-kilometre loop follows sunny paths around the village and through the Schafbach Valley before returning to the mill. The route therefore starts and ends at the same place, connecting the plateau and valley in one circular walk.
The circular trail follows well-maintained paths and is also suitable for off-road strollers. If you are travelling with one, you can include this loop in your itinerary. This suitability information applies to the “Around Schöneseiffen (33)” circular hiking trail.
Remembrance and local traditions
The red sandstone cross at the Schöneseiffen war memorial has a special commemorative purpose: the names of those killed in the First World War are carved into it. Twenty-two German war dead are buried at the Schleiden-Schöneseiffen war cemetery. Memorial sites and hiking landscapes offer different points of interest during your stay.
The harvest thanksgiving parade is also part of the village’s history: the first one in Schöneseiffen took place in 1953. The parade is held every year on the first Sunday in October. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the event date in advance.
Another opportunity to experience local club life is the “Youth Day” held by the Schöneseiffen Music Association. The event takes place annually, and visitors can look at and try out many instruments. Check the specific date before your trip.
