Detmold: Castle, Craftsmanship and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Detmold
Detmold brings together Weser Renaissance, everyday Westphalian culture and hikes through the countryside. Three places offer distinct highlights: the Princely Residential Palace in the heart of the city, the Hermannsdenkmal in the district of Hiddesen, southwest of the city centre, and Falkenburg near Detmold-Berlebeck. When looking for accommodation, it is worth first considering whether you want to focus on the palace and the city’s history, historic workshops or a hike.
Palace, Monument and Castle Complex
Detmold’s Princely Residential Palace is a palace in the Weser Renaissance style. The Hermannsdenkmal stands on the 386-metre-high Grotenburg. Falkenburg was built in 1194 or 1195 by Bernhard II of Lippe and his son Hermann II. Today, its ruins convey the impression of a medieval hilltop castle. The curtain wall, keep, great hall, outer bailey and zwinger give the complex a clearly distinguishable architectural layout.
The kind of visit also differs: a guided tour of Falkenburg with the Die Falkenburg e.V. association can be combined with a journey back to the Middle Ages. Check before your visit whether a tour is available. This lets you plan the palace and castle complex as different ways of exploring Detmold’s history, without reducing your experience to a single attraction.
Everyday Westphalian Culture in Historic Workshops
The LWL Museum Hellerlecht (LWL Open-Air Museum Detmold) covers more than 90 hectares and includes around 120 historic buildings spanning 500 years of everyday Westphalian culture. In the historic workshops, a blacksmith, baker, weaver, miller and potter demonstrate traditional techniques. This means that, alongside the buildings, hands-on craft demonstrations are also a central feature. As the demonstration programme may change, check in advance which demonstrations will take place on the day of your visit.
Getting Around and Planning a Hike
The Lippisches Landesmuseum is a ten-minute walk from Detmold station. Alternatively, buses 701, 704, 708, 782 and 790 run from the station to the Landesmuseum stop; the journey takes about four minutes. You can therefore choose between a ten-minute walk and an approximately four-minute bus ride. Check the routes and timetables before travelling.
The approximately 6.5-kilometre Hangsteinweg starts in Detmold’s Berlebeck district at the Hangstein hiking car park, below the Hohe Warte nature reserve. The route length and starting point give you concrete details to help plan your day. If you would like to combine cultural sites with a hike, you can first decide which destinations to prioritise and how the stated route length fits into your stay.
Lippe as a Wider Region
Across the wider destination of Lippe, the hiking trail network covers around 2,000 kilometres. It includes part of the European Long-Distance Path E1 as well as the award-winning Hermannshöhen and Hansaweg trails. Also in Lippe, the Fürstenroute is a multi-day tour linking the palaces, castles and parks of the Lipperland region. These regional offerings are on a different scale from the individual Hangsteinweg: a far-reaching trail network and a route spanning several days sit alongside a single, clearly described trail.
Lippischer Pickert also offers a taste of the region: this potato speciality is served in inns, farm cafés and restaurants. If you would like to try it, check the menu at the establishment you choose; the offering may vary from one business to another.
Choose Accommodation to Suit Your Priorities
When looking for accommodation in Detmold, you can compare the locations with your plans: the palace is in the heart of the city, the monument is in Hiddesen, and Falkenburg and the start of the Hangsteinweg are in Berlebeck. Consider which destinations matter most to you, and focus your search on a location that suits them. This turns the choice between city history, craftsmanship and hiking into a practical guide for your stay.
