Discover Steinfurt: Concert Gallery, Bauhaus and Circular Routes
Accommodation in Steinfurt
Steinfurt brings together a remarkable concert history, Bauhaus art, local history and circular routes with different themes. Between the Concert Gallery, the moated castle and the stops in Borghorst, you can combine cultural interests with outdoor routes. When planning your trip, it is worth considering which experiences you would like to focus on.
Concert Gallery, Moated Castle and Museums
The Concert Gallery was built in 1774, modelled on the Grand Trianon garden salon at Versailles, and is considered Europe’s oldest freestanding concert hall. International artists perform at the Concert Gallery in Bagno Park. This means that the venue combines a specific connection to the 18th century with its use as a concert hall. If you are planning to attend a performance, check the event dates in advance.
Steinfurt Castle is a moated castle featuring Romanesque, Rococo and Neoclassical elements. It is inhabited by the descendants of its builders, the families of the Prince of Bentheim and Steinfurt. It is currently not possible to visit; check before planning your trip whether this restriction still applies.
The HeinrichNeuyBauhausMuseum exhibits works by Heinrich Neuy and other Bauhaus students and teachers, including designs and works in art, design and architecture. The Burgsteinfurt City Museum provides an overview of local history from the Early Middle Ages to the beginning of the 19th century. These offer different perspectives side by side: Bauhaus and its themes of art, design and architecture, and Burgsteinfurt’s history spanning many centuries.
The Borghorst Local Heritage House features a corner shop, a spinning and weaving room, a pharmacy, a cobbler’s workshop and a wooden shoe workshop. Visits are subject to special events or prior arrangement.
Walking Tours and Cycling Route
The 4.2-kilometre “Borghorst Through the Ages” circular walk takes in 17 stops with 19 information boards about how Borghorst has changed over the past century. The stops and boards make local history the focus of a walking tour; the time period covered is the past century.
The Mill Circular Route is 10.2 kilometres long. It passes through Burgsteinfurt’s historic old town, Bagno Park and over Buchenberg, as well as through the Hollich farming community. Along the way, it passes, among other places, the Lower Mill and the Hollich Windmill. This route combines historic sites with a trail that also extends beyond the town centre.
The 15.2-kilometre Concert Gallery Circular Route passes through Burgsteinfurt’s historic town centre, Bagno Park and as far as the town centre of Borghorst. Along with the Borghorst walk and the Mill Circular Route, it offers a clear comparison of distances: 4.2 kilometres, 10.2 kilometres and 15.2 kilometres. This makes it easy to compare the routes by length before planning your outings.
Another option for a longer cycling trip is the Radbahn MĂĽnsterland. Its route, which is more than 40 kilometres long, runs from Rheine to Coesfeld, passing directly through Steinfurt. Unlike the circular routes mentioned above, it has two named endpoints and passes through the town.
Choose Accommodation to Suit Your Interests
If architecture and cultural history are your main interests, the Concert Gallery, Bauhaus Museum, City Museum and Local Heritage House offer different points of interest. For outdoor excursions, the various route lengths and the course of the Radbahn make it easy to include suitable activities in your plans. The key question is whether you would rather visit individual cultural sites or include several routes in your trip.
