Discover Everswinkel: Churches, Art and Nature
Accommodation in Everswinkel
Everswinkel can be discovered through a wide variety of traces: an unusual town center, churches with clearly identifiable building phases, farming traditions and nature reserves. A walk through the center reveals historic rows of houses, monuments and modern art.
Town Center, Churches and Art
The Historic Quadrangle refers to a distinctive street layout in the town center. The streets form an irregular quadrangle shaped by the church, the houses around the church square and two old long-distance roads. The layout of the center thus offers a unique way into the town’s history: here, the church, square and street plan are visibly connected.
The Church of St. Magnus displays several distinct building phases. Only the Romanesque tower survives from the original church, which dates from the first half of the 13th century. Construction of the Gothic nave began on February 28, 1489, and was completed in 1522. Two animal-like sculptures, unique in the region, stand out on the south side. The history of the Church of St. Agatha dates back to before 1203. It is dedicated to Saint Agatha, who is considered a patron saint against fire. Its tower retains the Romanesque form of the foundation period and its defensive character.
Haus BrĂĽckhausen also brings together architectural character and history: it was first mentioned in a document in 1361. Its Renaissance building is considered the only one of the noble estates of Everswinkel and Alverskirchen to have retained its character over the centuries. La Croisette offers a different artistic perspective. The work by MĂĽnster sculptor Stefan Rosendahl is based on his own biometric body measurements and abstracts the human figure into forms such as knees, noses and heads.
Village History You Can Take Part In
Up'n Hoff focuses on traditional agricultural practices. Visitors can experience and take part in activities such as threshing grain and making linen. Depending on the program, visitor groups can also sow, thresh, churn butter, roast rye coffee, bake bread, process flax and dye finished linen fabrics. Guided tours include the permanent exhibition, the granary and the bakery. Groups should check in advance which activities are offered and whether arrangements need to be made.
Religious traditions are also part of the local landscape. Wayside shrines and crosses around the village still serve as blessing altars during the annual processions. Everswinkel’s oldest wayside shrine dates from 1699 and stands at Hof Averberg. This connects a specific historical date with a procession tradition that is still maintained today.
Nature Reserves and Leisure Activities
In Alverskirchen, you can explore the Dorffeld nature reserve on foot or by bicycle. Numerous small paths and farm tracks wind through the MĂĽnsterland park landscape. Another distinctive feature is the Kettelerhorst woodland on the southeastern edge of Everswinkel, home to a colony of grey herons. On the eastern edge, the Mussenbachaue nature reserve protects a lowland stream and naturally wet woodland along its banks. The Angelniederung nature reserve, west of the K 33, includes a renaturalized stretch of the Angel and the adjacent floodplain. The reserves offer a variety of landscapes, from paths through parkland to woodland, streams and river floodplains.
Everswinkel is also home to the all-weather leisure pool Vitus-Bad and the 18-hole BrĂĽckhausen golf course. If you plan to visit either, check the visiting and usage conditions in advance.
