Pronsfeld: Nature, Railway Trails and Village History
Accommodation in Pronsfeld
In Pronsfeld, protected landscapes, village history and active pursuits come together. With a little luck, you can watch beavers at “work” in the Alfbachtal. Hiking trails and railway-trail routes start at the former railway station; there are also cycling routes and a bike park offering a range of different activities.
Alfbachtal and Nature Watching
The Alfbachtal near Pronsfeld is a nature reserve. One special opportunity for observing nature is spotting beavers: with a little luck, you can watch them at “work” there. This is a chance encounter, not something that can be planned. Alongside the trails and local history, the protected landscape is another distinct focus of your stay.
Railway History and the Pronsfeld Townscape
The small, informative railway museum in Pronsfeld recalls the time when the village was a railway hub. It offers a unique insight into the history of the railway, which also plays a role in today’s railway-trail routes. The parish church stands in the centre of the village. Its slate-covered dome and freestanding bell tower, built in 1962, give the townscape two distinctive architectural features.
If you like to include a viewpoint in your excursions, you can add the Giant Chair to your plans. The observation chair is reachable on foot from the cemetery at the Old Church via the K120 and stands at an elevation of about 463 metres.
Hiking Trails, Cycling Routes and Bike Park
Pronsfeld has eight hiking trails that start at the hiking and cycling car park at the former railway station. They pass through fields and woodland to viewpoints such as Hochberg. The former railway station is also the starting point for railway-trail routes. A large car park offers convenient parking for cyclists, hikers and inline skaters arriving by car.
There are several distinct options for cycling. The Enz Cycle Route, Prüm Cycle Route and Eifel-Ardennes Cycle Route meet at the Pronsfeld cycling-route junction. The railway-trail cycle route from Pronsfeld to Prüm is 10 kilometres long and fully paved. The Enz Cycle Route runs from Pronsfeld to Neuerburg for 25 kilometres along a former railway line.
Mountain bikers will find different trail features at Pronsfeld Bike Park: since 2019, they have been able to use a dirt line with four dirt jumps and a pump track. The pump track features two 180-degree banked turns, various bumps and small doubles for training stamina and coordination. A circular route about two kilometres long connects Pronsfeld Bike Park and the Hochberg Trail. These offer a mountain biking focus that sets them apart from the paved railway trail and hiking routes.
Accommodation and Trip Planning
The “Am alten Bahnhof” motorhome pitch in Pronsfeld is right next to the cycling network and the starting point of the Nordic walking park. If you are travelling by motorhome, you can include this specific location in your plans.
