Braunshorn lies on the Hunsrück plateau, surrounded by meadows, forests, and fields. From here, the view stretches across the Vorderhunsrück. Nearby hiking and cycling trails complement the town’s history: St. Markus was built in the 19th century, while Zur Alten Burg preserves traces of an early medieval motte. Here, landscapes and different historical periods come together.

Church architecture and early local history

St. Markus Church is a three-aisled rubble-stone hall. It was built by F. Nebel of Koblenz between 1830 and 1833. Its three-aisled layout and rubble-stone masonry give the building its distinctive architectural form. St. Markus and its cemetery are listed as an architectural complex.

Zur Alten Burg is a heritage zone preserving parts and traces of the central earthworks and ditches of an early medieval motte. The earthworks and ditches point to the layout of the historic site. The Braunshorn castle mound is believed to have been the original seat of a family of significance in the HunsrĂĽck. It is on the edge of the village, on a privately owned, developed plot; bear this property status in mind when planning your visit.

HunsrĂĽck landscapes and trails

Braunshorn has nearby cycling and hiking trails. For cycling, the Schinderhannes Cycle Route is a useful option: it is considered a 38-kilometre route in the Kastellaun holiday region, follows the former HunsrĂĽck Railway line, and passes through Ebschied Bahnhof in the municipality of Braunshorn. Away from busy roads, it runs through HunsrĂĽck landscapes and offers views across the HunsrĂĽck heights. Check the current route before setting out.

The wider Rhein-HunsrĂĽck region

The landscapes of the Rhein-Hunsrück travel destination extend beyond Braunshorn. The Rhein-Hunsrück district includes large areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left-bank section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The district also encompasses large parts of the Hunsrück plateau and the quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley area, the Rhine forms the district’s eastern border. Parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein municipal association and the town of Boppard are part of the UNESCO Upper Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage Site, which was recognized in 2002.

One of the region’s cultural highlights is the House of Regional History in Kastellaun. Through themed exhibitions, information panels, and original documents, it explores the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War. From April 25, 2026, the museum will be open Thursdays and Fridays from 12 to 5 p.m., and Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check opening hours before your visit. Regional specialties and Middle Rhine wines from high-quality vineyards are also part of the Rhein-Hunsrück district’s culinary profile.

The Rhein-HunsrĂĽck district has numerous hiking trails, including the certified Soonwaldsteig premium hiking trail. Extensive, well-developed, signposted cycling routes run along the Rhine and through the HunsrĂĽck. During the 2026 season, RadBus line 629, the RadBus HunsrĂĽck-Mosel, supports cycling trips on the Schinderhannes Cycle Route between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen and on the Schinderhannes-Untermosel Cycle Route between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. Check the timetable for your travel date before setting out.

Another destination in the Rhein-Hunsrück region is the Geierlay suspension bridge between Mörsdorf and Sosberg. It is 360 metres long and 100 metres high. Several circular routes, between 3 and 14 kilometres long, run around the bridge; both the start and finish are at the visitor centre in Mörsdorf. The Geierlay Dream Loop is 6.6 kilometres long and rated moderate. Check the current route before planning a specific hike.
