Emmelshausen combines hiking trails with railway and agricultural history, a leafy spa park and a varied programme of stage performances. A stay here can therefore have very different focuses: time outdoors, museum visits or cultural events. If you are looking for accommodation, consider whether you mainly want to explore Emmelshausen or also plan to visit places throughout the wider Rhein-Hunsrück region.

Hiking trails between railway and gorge

The Hunsrück Railway hiking trail starts at Emmelshausen station and follows the railway towards Boppard. Gorges, tunnels and viaducts characterise the route; designated viewpoints include Liesenfeldhütte and Hubertusschlucht. The railway landscape and striking terrain features come together to shape the hiking experience here.

Another hiking destination in Emmelshausen is the iron-rich Heilbrünnchen spring. A chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary stands right beside it. With sturdy footwear, the hiking route through the Ehrbach Valley and Ehrbach Gorge is considered suitable even for inexperienced hikers. Wild and romantic waterways shape the landscape in Ehrbach Gorge; it is a regional excursion destination linked to the hiking route in Emmelshausen.

Railway, agriculture and culture

The Hunsrück Railway Museum in Emmelshausen presents its permanent exhibition in the former goods shed and signal box. Exhibits include railway artefacts, a model railway and an extensive photographic exhibition. The Agricultural History Museum offers a different focus: it explores agricultural hand tools from the Stone Age to the present and presents the development of agriculture before the age of machinery. Railway history and the changing face of agriculture are thus presented as distinct subjects.

The spa park offers another way to set the pace of your stay: this green oasis lies in the heart of Emmelshausen and has a beer garden where visitors can relax. At Zentrum am Park, the programme ranges from cabaret, comedy and musicals to theatre and classical music; there are also events for children. If you would like to attend a particular performance, check the event date when planning your visit.

Getting here and planning your tour

Emmelshausen can be reached from Boppard by the Hunsrück Railway. Bus services run from Simmern, Kastellaun and Koblenz on routes 615, 620, 625 and 675. Check the relevant timetable for your journey. Check the seasonal timetable before planning your trip.

The wider setting: Rhein-Hunsrück

The wider travel destination of Rhein-Hunsrück opens up a broader landscape than the town itself. The Rhein-Hunsrück district encompasses large areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left-bank section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The district’s landscape includes parts of the Hunsrück plateau and the quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald; in the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary. Parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein municipal association and the town of Boppard are part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was recognised in 2002.

For hiking, the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein municipal association offers a dense network of certified premium trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels. The Rhein-Hunsrück district has numerous hiking trails, including the certified Soonwaldsteig premium hiking trail. For a longer-distance route, consider the Saar-Hunsrück Climb: it crosses the Hunsrück via Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard and covers 410 kilometres in 27 stages.

Another regional highlight is the Geierlay Suspension Bridge between Mörsdorf and Sosberg. It is 360 metres long and 100 metres high. Several circular trails, ranging from 3 to 14 kilometres, run around the bridge and start and finish at the visitor centre in Mörsdorf; the Geierlay Dream Loop is 6.6 kilometres long and rated moderate. The different route lengths provide a practical guide to planning your tour. Trail conditions can change, so check the latest information before setting out on a particular hike.
