Niederburg lies on the last terrace of the Hunsrück, above the Rhine. From here, views take in Schönburg Castle near Oberwesel, Gutenfels Castle and the Pfalz Castle near Kaub; hiking trails lead towards the Loreley rocks. The scenery, outdoor activities and traces of history offer different ways to shape your stay. When choosing accommodation, you can consider whether you mainly want to hike, enjoy the Rhine landscape or discover local history.

Church history and traces of the castle

Niederburg was first mentioned in 1286 under the name Nyderinberc. A church already stood here in 1309; in 1386, it was elevated to parish church status. These dates mark different stages in the village’s history, from its first mention to its ecclesiastical development.

The Romanesque church tower houses bells cast by Tyllmann von Hachenburg in 1427 and 1477. The tower thus connects the building’s history with two precisely dated bells from the 15th century. Parts of the former castle complex’s ring wall and moat have survived. The church tower and bells therefore represent a different historical thread from the castle’s structural remains: both provide a tangible connection to local history, which you can explore further as you learn about Niederburg.

Views of the Rhine and trails to the Loreley

The 412-metre-high Spitzestein has an 18.50-metre wooden tower offering panoramic views. Together with the views of the castles above the Rhine, it provides another perspective on the landscape. The views from the village and the panorama point offer different highlights: the Rhine Valley and its striking buildings on the one hand, and the view from the wooden tower on the other.

The hiking options also point in different directions: trails from Niederburg lead towards the Loreley rocks, while a hiking car park in Niederburg serves the Traumschleife Mittelrhein trail. There is also a barbecue hut at the KlĂĽppelberg viewpoint above the Rhine Valley, available for local residents to use. If you want to plan your days around a specific hiking destination, the Traumschleife Mittelrhein is the named point of reference; the trails towards the Loreley rocks offer another direction to explore.

The wider landscape differs from the immediate surroundings of Niederburg: the Rhein-Hunsrück district encompasses large parts of the Hunsrück plateau and the quartzite ridges to the south, including the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley area, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary. There are numerous hiking trails in the Rhein-Hunsrück district, including the certified premium hiking trail Soonwaldsteig. The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig runs across the Hunsrück via Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard and covers a total of 410 kilometres over 27 stages. The regional selection thus ranges from hiking trails connected to Niederburg to a multi-day stage route.

You can discover the region’s culture at the House of Regional History in Kastellaun. Thematic exhibitions, information panels and original documents present the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War.
