The Masdascher Burgherrenweg starts in Mastershausen: an approximately 13.9-kilometre circular trail with nine information stations. It leads to the remains of old mills and the ruins of 13th-century Balduinseck Castle; along the way, views open out across the HunsrĂĽck landscape. The Burgberg, historic buildings and community life add archaeological, architectural-history and cultural themes to the picture.

Water, Woods and Trail Highlights

The Masdascher Burgherrenweg crosses two streams via footbridges and reaches the “Am Katzenloch” rest area. On one section, it passes under the L 203 alongside the stream, then continues through an alluvial forest and crosses the water via a footbridge. The trail passes Kaspers Mühle, a 19th-century watermill, before climbing to the Burgberg. This means that, in addition to the historic sites, you can include stream crossings and a stretch through alluvial forest in your circular hike.

Archaeology and the Townscape

The Burgberg, a protected archaeological monument, lies about two kilometres northwest of Mastershausen. Coin finds are associated with Roman activity dating from the second half of the 3rd century to the beginning of the 5th century. Balduinseck and the Burgberg thus offer different historical points of reference: the ruins of a 13th-century castle at one, and evidence of the Roman era at the other.

Other historic features of Mastershausen include St. Lucia Parish Church, historic farmhouses and half-timbered buildings, religious sculptures and roadside crosses, as well as boundary stones. These features broaden the focus from castles and archaeology to the townscape and traces from different periods.

Mining, Observation Tower and Community Life

The Masdascher Burgherrenweg also reaches the Apollo mine. Ore, rather than slate, was mined there; the mining field was developed from 1891 onwards. The Galgenturm has stood on the Hunsrück plateau since 2008 and is intended to evoke a Roman watchtower. The “Spectakel” theatre association adds a cultural touch: it regularly stages plays and helps keep the regional dialect alive.

Guided Tours, Bus Connections and Choosing Accommodation

An informative guided tour is offered at 2 p.m. on the first Sunday of every month in the “Am Fürstengrab” forest cemetery. The meeting point is the car park at the forest cemetery. If you plan to join the tour, check the date again before you travel.

On weekdays, bus route 630 serves the Kastellaun–Mastershausen (Balduinseck Castle Ruins) connection. At weekends, routes 615 and 630 run with a change in Kastellaun. Check the latest timetables before travelling.

If you want to focus more on history and culture, the Burgberg, the townscape and theatre performances offer different highlights. This lets you connect your accommodation search with the experiences that matter to you during your stay.
