Discover Rohrbach: Half-timbered houses, film history and juniper heathland
Accommodation in Rohrbach
Rohrbach combines protected village architecture, a juniper heath and its own film history. Historic village scenes, nature and excursion destinations in the wider Hunsrück offer a range of highlights for your trip.
Village history and traces of film
The Protestant church on Hauptstraße is an early Neoclassical hall church dating from 1791. The surrounding ensemble is also part of Rohrbach’s protected heritage. The historic village buildings are complemented by protected 19th-century half-timbered houses and a half-timbered bakehouse from 1840. These buildings offer a tangible way to trace the village’s history.
Rohrbach was first mentioned in 1304 in the records of the archive of the Counts of Sponheim. Another historical episode dates to 1958: the film Schinderhannes was shot in Rohrbach under the direction of Helmut Käutner, with many local residents taking part in the filming. Woppenroth, south of Rohrbach, served as the main filming location for the television series Heimat. The area therefore offers stories from different eras of filmmaking.
Juniper heathland and rocky landscapes
The juniper heath near Rohrbach is a nationally designated nature reserve. A conservation project in 2023 involved clearing woody growth and planting new juniper cuttings. These measures offer a practical insight into the care of this landscape, broadening the village’s appeal beyond its architectural history.
Nearby scenic destinations offer further highlights: hiking trails in the Lützelsoon run beneath long quartzite cliffs. The nearby Teufelsfels is a 568-metre-high quartzite outcrop that rises above the treetops. A viewing tower stands beside it, offering views over 42 villages. Together, the rock formation and lookout provide two different reasons to explore the regional landscape.
Ruins and trails in the surrounding area
The nearby Hellkirch ruins are the remains of a small building made of slate rubble stone; three walls and a Gothic window opening survive. The route there follows a meandering stream and winds along forest paths. A hike of several hours between Schneppenbach and Woppenroth passes through the largely undeveloped landscape of the Hahnenbachtal. The valley is also home to the Schmidtburg ruins, which are associated with the activities of Schinderhannes.
Those who enjoy comparing different hiking landscapes will find a network of certified premium trails in the wider Hunsrück-Middle Rhine region. These include the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, the Rheinburgenweg and the Traumschleifen trails. The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig crosses the Hunsrück via Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard; the route covers a total of 410 kilometres in 27 stages.
The wider Rhein-Hunsrück area as a base for excursions
In the wider travel destination of Rhein-Hunsrück, the landscape of the Rhein-Hunsrück district extends from large areas of the Hunsrück in the Rhenish Slate Mountains to the left-bank section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The district also includes large parts of the Hunsrück Plateau and the quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald; in the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rhine forms its eastern boundary. Parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein collective municipality and the town of Boppard are part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised in 2002.
Regional hiking destinations also include the certified Soonwaldsteig premium trail. Another attraction is the Geierlay suspension bridge between Mörsdorf and Sosberg: it is 360 metres long and 100 metres high. Several circular trails ranging from 3 to 14 kilometres start and finish at the visitor centre in Mörsdorf. The Geierlay Traumschleife is 6.6 kilometres long and rated moderate.
The wider Rhein-Hunsrück district also offers plenty of guidance for cycling tours, with an extensive network of well-maintained, signposted cycle paths. During the 2026 season, RadBus Hunsrück-Mosel, route 629, supports trips along the Schinderhannes cycle route between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen and the Schinderhannes-Untermosel cycle route between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. Check the seasonal timetable when planning your trip.
For a cultural excursion in the wider Rhein-Hunsrück area, the Museum Haus der regionalen Geschichte in Kastellaun features themed exhibitions, information panels and original documents exploring the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War. From 25 April 2026, it will be open Thursdays and Fridays from 12 noon to 5 pm, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11 am to 5 pm. Check opening hours before your visit.
