Ellenhausen: Meadows, Forests and Village History
Accommodation in Ellenhausen
Ellenhausen lies at the confluence of the Sayn and the Kleine Saynbach. Extensive meadows and quiet forests shape this rural village and provide a setting for walks, bike rides and nature experiences. Those who enjoy spending time outdoors will find a village character here that is distinctly different from a city or a destination visited purely for day trips.
Meadows, Forests and Water Nearby
The landscape around Ellenhausen invites you to hike, cycle and enjoy nature. Meadows and quiet patches of woodland set the scene for days outdoors; the confluence of the two streams also defines the local setting. This makes it easy to combine your stay with time in nature, without any one excursion defining the character of the place.
Nearby is Klingelweiher, a spring-fed swimming lake with a sunbathing lawn, terrace, kiosk, playground and pedal-boat rental. These facilities offer a different focus from the quiet woodland and meadow areas. If you are planning a visit, check the facilities and availability locally before your trip.
The Westerwald Lake District, a nature reserve with seven ponds, is also nearby. An extensive network of hiking and cycling trails offers ways to explore the ponds. You can therefore choose between a single swimming lake and a landscape of several ponds as different destinations.
Plan Your Routes and Journey
The El1, Ellenhausen 1, is a six-kilometre route between Selters and Ellenhausen associated with the Saynbach. Ellenhausener Weiher is the first stage of a twelve-kilometre cycle tour through Ellenhausen. The different route lengths provide a concrete measure for planning: the six kilometres of the El1 compared with a twelve-kilometre cycle tour. Route information may change; check the latest notices before setting out.
Ellenhausen is also served by bus: route 461 serves the village on a connection linking Selters or Dierdorf with Ransbach-Baumbach. Check the current timetable from VRM or the Westerwald district before travelling.
Village History and Notable Places
Ellenhausen was first documented in 1100. The village has preserved its rural character, shaped by regional tradition and country life. A look at its history also shows how closely work in earlier times is connected to the landscape today.
A clay mine was established near the cemetery in 1913, providing work for local residents. Today, a lake occupies the former mine site and is used as a fishing pond and recreational facility. If you are planning specific activities there, check locally how it is currently used.
At the edge of the village in the direction of Deesen and Sessenhausen, the wooden cross stands on Sayntalstraße. It was erected by the municipality and blessed on 24 August 1856. Following renovation in 1980, it remains a notable historical landmark.
Another destination in the area is Grenzau Castle. It has Germany’s only triangular keep, making it a distinctive feature among the region’s historic attractions.
