Kundert: Natural Landscapes and Mining History
Accommodation in Kundert
Kundert combines a protected landscape with a specific chapter in its local history: the Steinchen copper ore mine. Those interested in the local natural environment will also find distinctive names of bodies of water associated with the municipal area. In addition, the wider Westerwald destination offers other themes, from hiking trails to museums. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between these local and regional highlights.
Natural Landscapes and Mining History in Kundert
Kundert is located in the Kroppacher Schweiz nature and landscape conservation area. The source areas of the Lauterbach, Selbach and Erchebach streams lie within Kundert’s municipal area. This gives the landscape a clear regional connection: three named streams begin in this area. The Steinchen copper ore mine is also part of the village’s history; it operated from 1896 to 1926. This period establishes mining as a historical activity, not a present-day industry.
These themes offer two different ways to explore Kundert: its location in a protected area draws attention to nature and the landscape, while Steinchen recalls the former extraction of copper ore. If you are considering Kundert as a destination, you can decide which of these highlights matters more for your plans.
Hiking Trails and Landscapes in the Westerwald
In the wider Westerwald destination, the Kroppacher Schweiz offers wooded slopes, quiet river valleys and viewpoints overlooking the Nister Valley. Numerous hiking and cycling trails cross a largely unspoilt landscape. The “Weltende” nature trail follows narrow paths and natural trails; some sections are secured with wire ropes. Along the way, there are views across the Nister Valley. As trail conditions and access may change seasonally, check both before setting out.
For longer hiking plans, the Westerwald offers two trails with different stage structures: the WesterwaldSteig is 235 kilometres long and has 16 stages. The Druidensteig covers 94 kilometres in seven day stages, passing through seven river valleys; there are more than 30 geo-information points along the route. These figures convey the different scales of the routes. For stage planning, check the current WesterwaldSteig route planner.
The Westerwald also offers a range of subjects for nature watching and landscape photography. The Holzbach Gorge is a breakthrough valley around one kilometre long, with basalt walls up to 30 metres high. The Westerwälder Seenplatte is a natural area with seven ponds. At 657 metres, the Fuchskaute is the highest point in the Westerwald. Each of these places represents a different type of landscape, from bodies of water and basalt walls to the region’s highest point.
Museums, Crafts and Local History
In the Westerwald, Stöffel Park brings together industrial heritage, geological history and nature on a former basalt quarry site covering around 140 hectares. Fossils are on display in the TERTIÄRUM, including the famous “Stöffel mouse”. The fossils document around 25 million years of geological history. This regional theme brings a former industrial site together with evidence of the Earth’s history.
The Westerwald Ceramics Museum explores the history of working with clay. Most of the objects on display originated in a Westerwald clay pit. In the museum workshop, visitors can get creative themselves under expert guidance. Check the current workshop programme and booking conditions before your trip.
Those interested in historic townscapes can find restored half-timbered houses around the Old Market in Hachenburg. The Lion Fountain is also part of the town centre’s historic character. In Hachenburg, the Erlebnis-Brauerei offers beer experience tours and brewing courses; individual appointments can be arranged by phone. Check the current arrangements in advance.
