Pottum: Wiesensee, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Pottum
Pottum offers two clear themes for planning a trip: the parish church in the village center and Wiesensee as a focal point of the town. Around the lake, you will find opportunities for swimming, sailing and surfing, as well as trails for short walks and longer excursions. Theater and historic architecture add to the local experience. The wider Westerwald destination also offers further themes for a trip combining nature, culture and activity.
Wiesensee: Landscape and History
Wiesensee, covering about 80 hectares, is a focal point for Pottum, Stahlhofen am Wiesensee and Winnen. Around 32 hectares of the lake lie within the boundaries of Pottum. The surrounding area is part of the Secker Weiher/Wiesensee landscape conservation area and includes a bird sanctuary. The lake was finally impounded in 1971; the first trial impoundment took place in autumn 1969.
At Wiesensee, you can swim, sail and surf. The Palzhahn sunbathing lawn covers about two hectares and offers access to the water, a playground, a volleyball net, a kiosk, changing rooms and showers. Check the current status of the individual facilities before your visit if you plan to use them during your day out.
Circular Trails and Active Days
If you want to walk around Wiesensee, allow about an hour. An approximately six-kilometer circular trail can be used by people with strollers and wheelchair users. The accessible Kleiner Wäller circular trail is about 6.5 kilometers long. Check trail conditions before setting out. For a longer hike, the approximately 20-kilometer “Grüner Steig und Seenweg” trail explores Wiesensee and its surroundings.
There are also cycling routes around the lake and longer rides through the surrounding Westerwald. For longer hikes in the area around Pottum, the WesterwaldSteig is another option. The Wiesensee golf course includes an 18-hole course, a driving range and a 9-hole short course; check current operations before your visit. There are motorhome pitches at the marina in the Pottum area; check current availability before you travel.
Church, Theater and Historic Building
The Catholic parish church of St. Bartholomew stands in the village center. Its preserved old tower stands beside the newer church and parish center; together, they form a focal point for local residents. Theater am Wiesensee attracts audiences from far beyond Pottum. These cultural experiences complement time spent by the water and on the trails.
The house at Hermannsweg 1 is also part of the village’s historic character. It is a listed cultural monument: a partly masonry and slate-clad house with decorative half-timbering dating from the second half of the 18th century.
More Themes in the Wider Westerwald Destination
The wider Westerwald destination offers additional nature and culture experiences. Stöffel-Park is a former basalt quarry covering about 140 hectares in the Westerwald, combining industrial heritage, geological history and nature. The TERTIÄRUM at Stöffel-Park displays fossils, including the famous “Stöffel Mouse”; the fossils document around 25 million years of Earth’s history.
The Westerwald Ceramics Museum presents the history of working with clay. The objects on display mostly originated in a Westerwald clay pit. Visitors can get creative themselves in the well-equipped museum workshop under expert guidance. Check the current workshop program and booking conditions before your trip.
