Stahlhofen am Wiesensee is located on a hill near the western shore of Wiesensee, which covers around 80 hectares. The lake is visible from much of the built-up area. One historic landmark in the village is the old village school: it was built in 1830 and is a listed monument.

Wiesensee has been drained since February 2023; refilling is expected to begin in early 2027. Sailing and swimming are suspended until the lake is refilled. The circular trail, café, hotel and golf course remain accessible.

The Holzbach Gorge is considered one of the oldest nature reserves in the Westerwald. It is also a highlight of the WesterwaldSteig loop trail and is around 30 metres deep. Before setting out on the Stiftsweg W 2, check for current notices about temporary changes; conditions on natural trails can change with the weather.

More experiences in the wider Westerwald destination

In the wider Westerwald destination, Stöffel-Park offers a distinctive experience: the approximately 140-hectare site of a former basalt quarry combines industrial heritage, geological history and nature. Fossils are on display at the TERTIÄRUM in Stöffel-Park, including the famous “Stöffel mouse”. The fossils document around 25 million years of Earth’s history.

The Westerwald Ceramics Museum also offers a glimpse into the history of working with clay. The objects on display usually originate from a Westerwald clay pit. In the well-equipped museum workshop, you can get creative yourself under expert guidance. Check the current workshop programme and booking conditions before travelling.

For longer hikes, the WesterwaldSteig is another option in the wider Westerwald destination: the long-distance hiking trail is 235 kilometres long and has 16 stages. Check the current route planner as you plan your trip. This means that trails and cycling routes are the main focus at Wiesensee, while destinations in the Westerwald complement them with other themes such as geology, ceramics and long-distance hiking.
